This week I was going to post my six tips for spotting a cancer scam. Because it's quite a long post, I composed it in Word first, intending to copy and paste it into here. But using control V or the 'paste from Word' function here didn't work, however many times I tried. And right now I can't be bothered to type it all out again. So you are spared my musings on the Gerson therapy etc until I've got the energy to try again.
I'm continuing the mindfulness theme instead....
Another week of recovery over, and despite the reduction in medication half way through the week I cannot comment that i feel any better or any worse. All i do know is that my appetite is down, there is only so much you can look forward to mashed/pureed food, and i am having to drink additional nutritional shakes to keep the calories up. Still it is the weekend and off to watch son play rugby this afternoon and hopefully get a trip to the seaside in on Sunday afternoon (will record the 6 Nations...
Three weeks after my op I am at home getting used to the new eating regime and the inconvenience of hot flushes due to dumping syndrome. I am going for walks, building up the distance gradually day by day. I am up to 1.5 miles now less than two weeks after being discharged. I am told that my speedy recovery is due to my good physical shape going into surgery. It won’t be as rapid for older or less fit individuals. The specialist nurse will be able to talk you through what you might expect post operatively...
It was certainly a shock when the surgeon told me what the operation entailed: two large incisions and collapsing one lung! But my experience was not as bad as I had feared.
I had an epidural inserted before the general anaesthetic, which meant when I awoke I had no wound pain. What I did have was a sore throat and shoulder. Three 3 week cycles of ECX Chemo (with carboplatin replacing the more usual cisplatin to protect my already poor hearing) throughout November and into the New Year.
After the first cycle my white cell count was too low to embark on a further cycle without a week's rest. It was low again after the second cycle but they went ahead with he next cycle but I had daily injections to stimulate my white cell could and boost my immunity. I started my last cycle on Christmas Eve.
Not too many side effects...
slight difficulty in swallowing on two occasions while on holiday last summer. Mentioned it to my GP in passing, some weeks later. His response was "we'd better get that checked out"
2 weeks later I had a gastroscopy and a specialist nurse told my wife and I that there was a tumour in my oesophagus and that It was most probably cancer, but this would be confirmed after tha biopsy taken had been examined.
CT and PET scans were done and an endoscopic ultrasound followed at one week...
After a reasonably positive day yesterday, today could not have started any worse. I decided to go for a drive in the car and bumped it getting out of the drive, the car was parked back up with a scuff mark from the wall down the rear passenger door so no real damage done - what an idiot! Mission Failed! Had a visit from the welfare team from work today, they seem very positive and have sorted out my new post this summer. i now need to engage with my current bosses to start thinking about leaving...

Lots of excitement today as my better half arranged for an early appointment at hospital to address the amount of drugs I am taking and whether they could start to be reduced somewhat. I headed for Southampton to discuss with the team, who had kindly offered to slot me in for a consultation rather than having to wait another week. I came out of hospital with a reduced pain relief (less 25%) and the removal of one of my anti sickness medications and also the knowledge that I can stop taking the steroid...
My kidney was less painful yesterday but it was a day of extremes - success if it was the finishing touches to BF's birthday present, but epic fail when shopping for me.
The camera I bought through eBay didn't work, and it took a phone call to them this morning for the seller to behave and refund my money. Now I've bitten the bullet and bought one I was watching as a backup. It's a lot safer but it's more than I really wanted to pay. I hope it will be 4th time lucky.
