The Saturday before last was a Better Day.
Mr B’s carer arrived at 09:15 so he was up, dressed and ready to go out by 10:15. We drove into the nearby village, had toast and coffee for breakfast in a little bar, then wheeled the shopping trolley to the street where the Saturday market stalls were. Mr B usually stays in the bar nursing his coffee while I do the weekly fruit and veg shop, so it was a good sign that he wanted to come. Lots of people greeted him, having not seen much of him lately (we used to be out and about a lot!). Then he suggested a walk by the river, which was amazing. Something else that we used to do regularly, but not for a while. We didn’t get far but saw and heard some autumn birds and made it to a bench for a rest before walking back to the car. Which was almost too much, but he made it! Then home for some lunch and a sleep in his chair. In the evening we went to a special mass at the church (we’re both practicing Catholics) but didn’t join in the procession afterwards as it would’ve involved more walking, plus it had turned chilly! Mr B suggested a beer in a nearby bar, where we met a couple who we’re quite friendly with. One non-alcoholic beer turned into three as we chatted, mainly about our families, plus comparing UK and Spanish pensions (I’ve just started getting my UK state pension), and we got home at 11pm!
Followed by a week of Bad Days. Mr B very unwell with a kidney infection and not able to do much at all. Enormously tired and needing help with everything. He gets frequent infections which apparently is par for the course for people with no bladder and only one kidney. We’ve got good at recognising the signs early, which is no bad thing as once or twice in the early days after his bladder removal op he ended up in A&E. And was once three weeks in hospital in Granada waiting for an infection to clear. The antibiotics he is able to take are limited by his poor kidney function so I just hope the bacterias don’t decide to become resistant. He’s feeling a lot better the last few days so was able to have his immunotherapy treatment on Monday. His latest CT scan results showed the metastatic tumours are stable. Stable is Good! Hoping we might be able to go out to dinner with friends on Saturday……
