    The mind demons
Well the mind demons are back, and back hard., after the nice news on friday that things are going well, worries are back with a vengeance, so they say my AFP is down since the last check, but is it, it just means that its lower, then when they last checked, it could be rising, i've had that twice before. Things still show in the scan, yes they could be scar tissue , but if they are why tell me they want me to have another high dose of chemo Will my stem cells mobilise well, they failed before...

    Day 6 recovering

Woke up today and felt fine.  No nausea as yesterday.  Got up and made tea first then breakfast for us both.  Had been up every hour last night, passing huge quantities of fluid.  Found I had lost 2kilos, (4lbs) in the past 24hrs and feel much less bloated.  PU and bowels now no problem.  No need for laxative today and I begin to wonder if I still need tamsulosin to help me PU.  If not, first time in 2 years!

Food variable and suddenly feel I need an antinausea pill.  Given maxolon by the chemo unit so...

  • Sublingual Salivary Gland Cancer- my journey
Radiotherapy day 8 for salivary gland cancer
Today's session took a little bit longer because there was a scan as well today. It just involves the machine rotating round more and a different bit starting at the top ( the scanning bit) I keep meaning to look up and find out what all the terms mean. It sounds like they are talking about soup and ants! Taste definately pretty much gone, which makes eating quite boring- but I'm shovelling it in!

Things are and aren't normal over in camp ginger. Conflicting information much?

I had my mum up to stay with us over the weekend and she was a complete love. I can only assume that having seen that I'm not likely to drop down any time soon has reassured her enough to be a smiley mothership, rather than an anxious 'freeze your eggs' talking one instead.

I was exhausted from my first week at work but with a couple of sly naps we managed to enjoy the weekend and make the most of it...

    Day 4 Side effects!

Well, the honeymoon period is over and the side effects have come as you could have told me they would.

The skeletal aches, in muscles and body bones, started yesterday afternoon.  Uncomfortable to sit or walk or rest.  Tiredness more than I've ever felt before.  Couldn't settle for sleep last night in spite of all usual pain relievers.  Tramadol just makes me so drowsy but doesn't really push me into nod.  Rough night having to get up every half to one hour, just to change position.  Tried...

  • Sublingual Salivary Gland Cancer- my journey
Radiotherapy day 7 for salivary gland cancer
No scans the last two days so treatment has been quite quick. Have been using the Caphopsol about 4 times a day. It comes in two different vials which you mix in together. Then you use half of it around your mouth for a minute then the second half. I've noticed a bit of a croak to my voice today which I'm assuming is part of the journey. Also can't really taste very much tonight, although I can still taste chocolate!

  • I'm Getting There
    Following last Wednesday

Following last Wednesday's fiasco:......I finally went to bed at nine after going to the toilet. I did a moderately normal wee about 60% of my usual. I laid In bed listening to classic fm for about an hour then felt the need to wee again. only this time nothing. no wee then the urge went. but It came back after fifteen minute's still nothing. after two hour's of this I started to worry the urge's were getting more frequent and I was starting to feel pain. I did not want to disturb my wife she was...

    Chemo plus 2. Calm optimism

I do hope these blog posts will help someone facing chemo for the first time.  I'm trying to describe my feelings as they come and go with some of the side effects that are not the ones listed and expected!

Today I'm so much better after a reasonable night's sleep.  Yesterday my mind was unhinged, I was on a steroid high.  I collected a lot of abdominal fluid in the 2 days since chemo so that, while hungry, I had nowhere inside to put the meal!  If I bent forward I would tend to regurgitate...

    Day one after chemo

I'm still here and still ranting!

First of all the chemo itself wasn't bad at all.  The staff were all charming in the unit, welcomed me by first name and fitted me in as soon as they could.  Two emergencies had made appointments 1-2hours late most of the day.  So I talked to other patients also waiting.  Some had had several cycles, others were having their first like me.

Called in by a nurse I knew well.  Drip set up expertly in a hand vein, no pain at all.  Saline wash through the line first...

Radiotherapy day 5 for salivary gland cancer

Yesterday was the end of the first week. It was quite quick being zapped. I did feel much more tired last night  - but that could just be general lack of sleep rather than anything related to the RT. I did woke up with a slight croak in my throat today but that wore off.

I had an appointment with my GP yesterday to talk about the possibility of getting the Caphopsol. When she looked it up in her book she said she didn't think it was something she could prescribe as it wasn't listed. She said she...
