Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma ... how it all started

My partner came home from work in Sept 2009 complaining of backache.  He was in absolute agony and at the doctors frequently for pain relief.  He was told it was siattica which usually resolves after 2 months and didn't warrant a CT scan until after that time frame.  In the mean time he went to see a physiotherapist privately which didn't make a spot of difference to the pain.  We had to phone 999 twice as the pain was so severe and it was the hospital who then chased his CT scan.  I remember...

  • My Mum, Me & Stage 4 Cervical Cancer
    Sun 07- Nov 2010

Well its been a hard weekend, I spent most of Friday crying as Mum is really sick she is still throwing up and I feel helpless in helping her. Spoke to a Doctor and really its a visious circle she has alot of pain for which they are giving her painkillers, which is then causing constipation, which is then causing vomitting. I just dont know what to do for her.

I am just sitting watching my Mum die, in my heart I feel that she wont be well enough ever again to get another session of chemo but I...

7 weeks with no treatment and CT results tomorrow

So following on from my last blog which was quite a while ago I havent had any treatment at all.  So to say I am worried about my scan results is a bit of an understatement to say the least.  I had an appointment with a locum oncologist a while back about the pain and lump in my breast and also the heart symptoms I had been experiencing.  He basically said what I was feeling in my breast was my ribs and that cancer doesnt grow in 2 months, which is how long it had been since my previous CT.  Ok I thought...

Bren pops his head round the mac door 2
So they have (at last) decided what is wrong with me, I went to play my my leading part in the next episode of 20,000 leagues inside Bren and the camera found I have a stomach hernia.  I was still going through a very bad period of having a very bloated and painful stomach and the weekend was a testing time. In desperation I managed to get a "released on the day appointment" to see a doctor at the surgery on my way for my cystoscopy. It was a doctor I hadn't seen before, but armed with the results...

    Still missing /my Wonderful Dad

Well, 15 months nearly since we lost Dad now. Still miss him loads although Most of my memories of him are good ones and the few months that he was ill for  are becoming distant. Everything reminds me of him, he had been an avid 'twitcher' or birdwatcher for over 50 years and of course, birds are everywhere. Once again, christmas is drawing near, a terrible time because we always spent it together and also at the beginning of December 3 days after my Mum he would have been celebrating his 80th birthday...

    A sunny Saturday

After having a few days away in the motorhome with windy and drizzle weather, we came home yesterday, and today we actually have a fine sunny day when I've managed to do washing (and dry it), and have 2 hours gardeing while my husband has rubbed down and stained the window frames.  A day of achievement as these jobs have been pressing for months!  I have also arranged coffee with friends Friday, agreed to go to Spain with my sister next weekend, and hope to go to the Target Ovarian wellbeing day...

    From the beginning

First blog ever so all very strange.

When I was 6 my mum met my Dad and for the past 20 nearly 21 years he has filled a parental role- We are as close as a father and daughter can be despite over a 100 mile distance.

I was working a late shift at work when he called me- told me they had x-rayed his chest due to a persistant cough and that there was something there that shouldn't be. He would call me in a few days once he had a PET scan and knew the result.

It was the longest wait I've experienced...

  • I never expected that
    The good news is...

... that following chemoradiotherapy over the summer, the tumour has reduced in size and scans from earlier this week show that there is no spread to other organs. Phew! And Hurrah!

Surgery is scheduled for 17 November. The less happy news is that it will be a permanent colostomy, and the whole rectum and anus will be removed. (Sorry about that for the squeamish or faint-hearted). I knew this was on the cards, but hearing about the detail of the operation and issues which may be faced during recovery...

  • My Mum, Me & Stage 4 Cervical Cancer
    Fri 05-Nov 2010 - lost

I have never written a blog in my life, in the past I have written diaries (in my teenaged years) and I have often thougtht that I should write some of this down but am having difficultly finding the time.

My Mum was diagnosed with stage 4b cervical cancer, lymphodema and possible secondary cancer in her lungs in July of this year, I am an only child and my Mum is divorced so its really only ever been me and her. I held her hand in the streets until I was about 13, and I remember her telling me...
