  • Holding on tightly to mum
On Wednesday we found out mum had cancer in her lung. That didn't mean anything to me. It was just a word. We went to a meeting at hospital and she had a biopsy on the Thursday. Afterwards I popped in to see the family dr and he told me it had spread through mum and gave me a time on how long she had left. That has sent my world crashing in. I have gone through hours of crying. Started to last at in rage at my poor husband and then surreal moments at feeling ok. My go is not a specialist and yes...

    Feeling Strange

So basically on Thursday I finally told my tutor about everything that's been going on with my mum. I don't think he was expecting to hear that my mum was dying. Academically, I'm going to be monitored until my January exams, if things go bad in January I can either defer the exams until august next year or take the year out. Not exactly a great selection of choice.

He also told me about the counselling service which I'm just signing up to now. My tutor was quite helpful and I think I...

  • Salvage radiotherapy - another journey
    In the beginning

Early in 2004, when I was 58, I went to see my GP about my twice nightly visits to the toilet. I knew that it is a common occurrence amongst men of my age and expected to be referred for ‘a simple procedure’ to the prostate gland to fix the problem. First, as a routine, I was asked to have a blood test. A few weeks later, I happened to be at my local surgery seeing the nurse for something trivial so mentioned I hadn’t had the result of the blood test. “No problem”, she said, “let’s look at your computer...

    The start

I posted about my situation in The Room. I have now decided to give the subject the space I feel it deserves and give it a blog of it's own and a full airing and ramble on in an attempt at some closure.

  • Finding out my Mum has GBM 4
    Good days and bad..

My Mum was starting to do really well, we were able to get her out of bed and in her wheelchair to sit in the lounge with us for a few afternoons, she was becoming really chatty (not making much sense) but still it is always good to hear her waffling on :)

But last Thursday afternoon/night she started sleeping a lot more, she had a seizure and then stopped responding to most of our questions, and then I was having to literally force the tablets into her mouth.  A complete turn (for what can only be...

    Happy dance time!

So we've had an emotional time of it lately, and last week felt quite sad because it was the first anniversary of losing grandad and mum hadn't remembered. She has had an awful lot on her mind t be fair, and I hadn't fully appreciated just how concerned she was about her latest MRI scan.

She phoned yesterday afternoon in floods of tears and I just assumed the worst until she managed to stutter out the words "it's good news" before bursting into tears again!

    Basically,...

    A new sense of direction

Thanks everyone for your comments and kind words I really do  appreciate it. Life has become very topsy-turvy recently particularly since I've left home.

I also want to thank everyone for their ideas, I really was struggling to think how any good could come from being away from home and what to do next but I have a better understanding of how to approach the problem now and for that im very grateful.

I've had a long discussion with my parents tonight I hadn't told them how much I was struggling...

  • Does it ever get easier?
    Back to it

I feel so lucky to have such an amazing best friend. Just got home from a surpirse week away in Birmingham, Cardiff and London. I've never laughed so much in one week, it reaaaally did take my mind off EVERYTHING. It was time away, we were able to laugh together and cry, so needed that. The night before we were due to go my mum took a turn for the worst, but it was planned so i returned home every other day to see her. SO thoughtful and even visited my grandparents whilst in birmingham.

    Now...
