    Avoidence

This is an amazing word which suits me down to the ground.

I spend so long looking after everyone, I am too tired to think of me.  Don't get me wrong, I shower each day, wash, blowdry and straighten my hair every second day, make sure my children are clean pressed and smiling for the day ahead...but all the time I spend doing that I am avoiding the grief.

This morning a teacher at my daughters school, who has said three words to me this term, told me that I was such and inspiration...

    Dying Toe & Fingernails

After 40 years at sea, I made up my own "First Aid Kit" for burns, cuts, grazes and Tropical Infections, because I frequently had to attend to my own injuries.
Surgical Spirit - for cleaning around injured area and removing plaster adhesives
Hydrogen Peroxide - for discharging infections - to draw out the Pus
Micropore Tape (Anti-Allergenic) Surgical Tape - for dressing the wound
Cotton Wool Buds - or other absorbent means of cleaning and applying the Hydrogen Peroxide
    - - - But since...

    Family visit

As further tests revealed the prognosis to be more serious, I revised my original plan not to tell my parents about my illness for now, and Irene and I went for a flying visit to see them.

As they live on a European island, it was a pretty lengthy trip by train, bus, two ferries, bus, walk - a day to get there, a day there, a day back - but I can’t imagine why I thought it was anything but the right thing to do. Quite apart from the effort of travel, it was far better that they see me while I’m...

My Diary of my Chemo treatment

    P.1       DAN'S  2 X "BIG C" DIARY                ( Cancer & Chemo FYI )

I HAVE A STRANGE WAY OF WRITING, WHICH SOME PEOPLE CAN'T IDENTIFY WITH.  SORRY ABOUT THAT - - I SUPPOSE I'M A BIT LIKE MARMITE

This is a sort of "Diary" of events during my time with Prostate Cancer.  I got the "brilliant" idea of putting it down in writing, and sending to all and sundry, and anybody who might be interested.  My reasoning is that Cancer hasn't been brought out in the open...

  • Breast cancer at 31
    1st cycle, day 6
Woke up with a slightly fuzzy head and feel about 80% today, think its the first day I've felt like I've actually had chemo. Temperature is still fine so I've taken a couple of paracetamol for the mild headache. Managed fine dropping the kids at school and nursery but having a lazy tv morning, guilt free!

    Oh happy news!
I am feeling much more positive and thought after my last blog update I should post another as a result. Was in quite a low place when I posted last time. I think hearing news of others losing their battle always affects you and with chemo zapping all my white blood cells, platelets, energy and optimism it left me feeling low, lonely and a bit fed up. Not like me at all so I am glad that after the chemo on the Wednesday I definitely felt more positive and more like me!! Well despite having...

my mum is my best friend my world

my mums original diagnosis was in dec 2011 and treatment for that finished in may, she was then told it responded well and looked like she was on the right track, until she woke up one morn couple of wks ago with a lump on her neck which they initially said could b an infection, turned out after it was cancer again and that it had spread.

we r all devastated and i have been trawling the internet for something, a breakthrough anything that may give a glimmer of hope, but everything is non small...

    Friday through to today

Well Friday was the CT scan, nothing unusual there. Had one before a few years ago, same old horrible tasting stuff to drink....

The weekend just flew past, shopping and visiting family.

Yesterday’s day care operation wasn’t as I expected, we turned up early as always and shown through to award of 11 beds. Everyone having something different done by the sounds of it. I had my observations done and was seen by an anaesthetist and the surgeons registrar who explained all they needed to. I tried...
