Three weeks have passed since we learned the devestating news.
The cancer is terminal they said, you freeze and say WHAT. This is news coming from a family member so can you imagine hearing this about yourself from the consultant.
Still hasn't sunk in. Will it ever, maybe eventually or maybe not.
Take it day by day they say, let it sink in. Still hasn't sunk in for me , as much as I try. Haven't told the grandchildren, who are 11 and 8. Any advice on how to approach this is welcomed...
I had a follow up appointment with the consultant today. He wasn't surprised with the side effects of chemo catching up on me and also the fatigue from the radiotherapy too, making it worse. My throat is seriously sore and feeling run down but he tells me my immune system is low so I will feel extra rotten. But nonetheless, he congratulated me on completing chemo.

Last week, I lost my first hair. I brushed my head wit my hand and, not a clump, but half a dozen hairs lay caught between my fingers. I knew it was coming, so was interested rather than shocked (also slightly relieved that if it is coming out, I'd rather it start before I attempt the cold cap again!). I gently finger combed my scalp to find more coming out around the edges of my hair. I had visions of my hair receding all round leaving me with a tufty top. In 2002 I had radiotherapy to treat a Squamous Cell Carcinoma, which had appeared between the toes of my left foot in 1999. (I’m told that an SCC in the foot is about as rare as hen’s teeth) The treatment was successful and although I developed a secondary cancer (successfully dealt with surgically in 2005) the long-term side-effects of the radiotherapy, which began to take effect in 2004, are now starting to become more problematical.

What a difference a week makes
After a week where nothing much happened (apart from the euros starting) and no significant improvements - frustrating but I'm sure I hid my disappointment well.... honest, this week has been full of positives:
Last week (22/9/16) I had a follow up appointment with my consultant following an operation to remove what I thought was a salivary gland tumour which has been biopsied and was benign. I dropped my kids off and went to the meeting with no thought for the news that lay ahead of me.
After my surgery (6/9/16) my consultant had said "it wasn't we thought" about the mass they had removed from my neck. Despite him telling me this, as I had had it biopsied under ultrasound I assumed that all I was going...
We've lost him. He's gone. I can hardly believe my last post was only 2 months ago and whilst things didn't look good, I could never have imagined this would be my next post.
He caught an infection and had to stop all chemo while he fought it, and obviously, well, he just couldn't.
I can't believe he's no longer with us. I really can't.
Radiotherapy is a lot harder than I had anticipated. Practising the Deep Inspiration Breathe Hold (DIBH) does not come naturally.
