    blogging to survive!

I am not quite sure why I started blogging as I am not really sure I "get" the medium.  As quite a private person everything in me, well almost everything resists putting anything out there in the public realm and surely a diary would do.  I'm told a weblog is a diary too but it cannot be because the very thought of writing something that other people might read changes the way I write, my diaries get written and burned so as not to be read. In a diary everything comes out as a splurge and...

    3rd chemo
Well completed the third round of chemo on the 26th, it was a long day as had to have Paxitel put through really slowly because of reaction last time. This is an important time chemo wise, as I am now having a scan on the the 9th July to see if things are improving, this scan is then going before the MDT on the 15th July, before my clinic appointment on the 16th so there are going to be decisions to be made. Anyway first day was'nt too bad a little nausea, but kept under control by anti sick pills...

  • Dad's Bowel Cancer Story
    Didn't start Chemo

Dad went to the hospital to start Chemo, but collapsed in pain. The doctors weren't happy and admitted him to a ward. During the night he crashed and they had to revive him, he was then taken to ICU.

Apparently he had an infection, not sure about the details. Don't know what caused it, where or when it started. But he had a course of antibiotics and the infection is now clear.

However, there was concern regarding his kidney function, and he was still getting pain after a series of tests...

    Preparing for the next cycle

This morning I saw saw my oncologist who was pleasantly surprised by my reaction to the first round. I must admit it was scary - tingling from the oxalyplatin with any contact with cold things, but I found ways to improve it, eg warming water a bit before washing vegetables, using the most affected hand quite a bit seemed to help and getting my husband to deal with anything to do with the freezer!

Tiredness was the biggest shock, but I will expect that this time. I'm lucky that in the last few...

  • My chemotherapy journey
    Round four
    Good morning folks

Just about to head to hospital for mid treatment CT scan, blood tests tomorrow then round four of chemo on Wednesday.

This month was pretty bad at the start but the past couple of weeks were fine, although even still I feel a very slight queasiness in my tummy.

Psychologically I find things hard at times, more in a being worn down sort of way. I'm fed up taking medication, fed up having needles stuck in me and just tired of the whole situation. The good thing is I'm...

    Sleepless night

Had a tough day yesterday. Every time I go to visit mum I look forward to seeing her, and this time was no different. She's had a few weeks off treatment and I was hoping that she might get some respite and be feeling a bit brighter.

I was gutted when I arrived because she looked totally exhausted and within 5 minutes of us arriving, took herself off to bed. She had made lunch, but was too tired to stay up and didn't want to eat.

Colin filled us in on what's been happening. She's been having...

    day 18 after 2nd chemo

Hi everyone i am back at last!! My daughter has loaned me her laptop until mine is repaired, i did'nt realise how much i depended on it. I must admit i've not been having too good a time recently, although i have'nt been really poorly, i have had little niggles of stuff such as, muzzy headache, nasty taste in my mouth and niggly pain here and there and above all else, the feeling that the cancer is taking me over and i'm going to die!!!!!. It's not something i feel able to talk to my family about...

  • Life after radical cystectomy
    Nearly two years on

An arbitrary point to post an update on my new normal.

I was told neos can continue to improve for 2 years and last year I found that hard to believe as I felt everything had settled down. But in subtle ways, I have noticed changes. I no longer feel so uncomfortable when filling up - that may be improved abdominal muscles. It means I don't get quite so much notice of need to empty, but I'm learning to re-estimate. I'm less likely to leak unless at max capacity.

    Nights have slowly improved...

    A brighter day

Well, there's been some sun today and I had a long night, so things are brighter. We went to the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth today to see the Mary Rose in its new museum - very impressive. We managed a floor of displays in detail but both of us decided to come back another time to do the rest justice.

I had to admit I was too tired to go shopping for our lunch, so sat in the car while my husband got it. I am very lucky that one of his favourite pastimes is food shopping, especially if...
