Didn't start Chemo

Less than one minute read time.

Dad went to the hospital to start Chemo, but collapsed in pain. The doctors weren't happy and admitted him to a ward. During the night he crashed and they had to revive him, he was then taken to ICU.

Apparently he had an infection, not sure about the details. Don't know what caused it, where or when it started. But he had a course of antibiotics and the infection is now clear.

However, there was concern regarding his kidney function, and he was still getting pain after a series of tests and scans my mum was informed that there is a large mass pressing on his kidneys.

Why did the team dealing with his bowel cancer at the other hospital not pick up this?
Is it that they ONLY look at their area of expertise, and not everything?

Apparently there is little point doing the Chemo now as it will have no effect, and they said dad probably has about 2 weeks left.

Oh my word I'm so sorry, that is so sad.

We found the same though, they only look at the area.  My dad had bowel cancer, but also a separate lung cancer.  He had treatment for lung cancer only.  After 3 chemos he had a CT scan and it's only because dad was complaining about pain around his hip area they decided to extend the scan to cover his abdomen, I mean seriously how much more would it cost/involve just scanning everywhere!

I know this may sound awful, but I hope you dad is not suffering and falls asleep quickly so as not to prolong his pain any longer.  Big hugs xxx

Sue, after all you've been through - now this. How are your children coping with the situation, or haven't you told them? I don't know what to say except that we are here for when you want/need us so don't hold back. And don't forget you can have a major meltdown in The Room.

    With love and hugs,

     Twirly xxx

    Hi,

Thank you for your kind messages.

Yes, the children are aware of the situation, my mum said we shouldn't tell them, and then say he died of a heart attack or something when he goes so they don't think everyone dies of cancer. I don't think this is a good idea, and when I am on the phone they overhear things, and know Grandad is in hospital. So I decided it was better to tell them the truth, anyway it comes out in the end and I don't like lying.

Mollyb I hope it is quick too, for everyone, though apparently I'm not allowed to say that. So I'm glad you did.

Dad says he doesn't feel ill, but he also says he isn't on any medication, though apparently he is on steriods. He doesn't understand why his legs don't work properly, and is convinced he'll be fine once he gets home. We are making arrangements for him to go to a hospice, as my mum would not be able to cope with him at home, he would drive her mad and she would end up hating him, which I don't think would be good for either mum or dad.
