    Chapter 7

Hi... where do I start? Joe was taken in to hospital with severe abdominal pain in the early hours of sunday morning.  After several hours of no news (you can probably imagine what I was thinking) we were told that Joe has adhesions that have caused kinks in his bowel.  Treatment is, morphine, NG feed and iv fluids to rest his bowel and hope that this is enough to put it right.... Fast forward to this morning.  I met him at the hospital for his oncology appointment and, to cut a long story short, he...

The strain we are all under

And when I say we - I mean us, on here, cancer patients, carers and families.

I had an appointment yesterday  with the Prof of Endocrinology to find out the results of last week's scan. My last scan was in May 09, after 6 months of chemo, and it showed some shrinkage which was good. But what had happened since then?  I have been getting increasingly nervous as the time drew near, and for me that means chronic insomnia. And although I'd tried to put it to the back of my mind over Xmas etc, it never...

Why Sandi Toksvig is one my my heroes.
Yes it's true and she is. I suppose this is not a real blog post in the strictest terms of reference but so what, who cares? I was googling (should that be a capital letter or only when it's the site title not the exercise?) as usual for strange and wonderful things. Todays foray into the cyber wilderness was about Tim Bentinck, who plays David Archer in the Archers, and that he does the voice you hear on the London Underground telling you to mind the gap. Along the way I found out that he is the...

    feeling low

today i am missing my mum so much! i still get up every day and have to remind myself that shes not downstairs or pottering about in the kitchen! i went to the marie curie hospic the other day - where my mum spent the last 2 months of her life - to hand in a donation. it felt awful, seeing the people, receptionists, place where my mum had been! i just wanted to run up to the 2nd floor and see her! nothings the same without my mum here! i would actually give anything to have her back in my life. sometimes...

The Soup is Off: Time for a Reality Check

A dose of reality for you today.  As if that’s what you need.
There are no prizes for guessing which script the director chose – the budget version, of course.
Now Our Hero is away, it is time for a 'reality check' and, my goodness, hasn’t reality a habit of creeping up on us idle blog writers when we are on our own.
So, my dear readers, I will remind you why we are here.  About nine months ago I mentioned to the oncologist that photodynamic therapy was a treatment...

As of today i get to spend more precious hours with my lovely hubby, as ive changed from working 41 hrs a week to just 18 hrs subject to change when we feel necessary, people all along this sad journey have tried to tell me what to do and ive ignored them , not the well meaning ones, just the ones who think they know it all , i have trusted my instincts and have done what i feel...

    So confused and helpless

My husband had the whipples op New Years eve 2008, followed by chemo, 6 mnths worth and then they decided to give hime radiotherapy. He was supposed to have 5 wks of this but was in so much pain after just 2 lots that they stopped this after his 5th amount, but he also ended up in hospital for 9days in such terrible pain and was very unwell.  They put him on morphine patches to help deal with the pain when he came home and also oxycon for back up. He did not last very long at home because he was...

    THE NEXT INSTALMENT
The novice scriptwriter continues.... Patient's wife is at best of times a nervous flier. She tolerates long haul business class as a means to see distant places, after a relaxing glass or so of complimentary champagne. She has spent a nervous day consulting official and unofficial weather forecasts. The UK airport (Birmingham) is operating normally except for flights to places where there is a problem with snow. After much internet surfing, she discovers that hundreds of flights out of Frankfurt...
