The Radioactive Man - coping with Head and Neck Cancer

    Hello all

I'm currently in remission for Head & Neck cancer. I'm sure this will sound familiar to some, but I wanted to write about my experiences. I started off by emailing friends and family on a regular basis, and some of them suggested creating on online blog. They seemed to appreciate that I was 'giving them permission' to speak to me about my experiences, as there was an initial reluctance to discuss what was happening - the elephant in the room syndrome.

    Anyway, I have...

Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 February, LID Day 6 and 7

Whoops! Yesterday started busy so I didn't make it to the computer. So it's Sunday lunchtime and you're getting the bumper weekend edition.

    Saturday
Butcher in the morning and another long conversation. The sausages - with the exception of the chorizo - are okay. The burgers are okay. They're going to phone me on Monday about the bacon.

So lunch was burgers and chips minus bread roll and cheese, but with a dollop of fried onions and extra salad.

Dinner was steak with rosemary saute potatos...

Valentines Day - I shouldn't be feeling pissed off
So we eventually got to meet the Oncologist last night. We had already decided to move to radiotherapy for the next step .... So after a full overview of what to expect and the steps in the process we ended the meeting with me expecting a call today to arrange the mask fitting for early next week. The oncologist is not working next week .... In his own words he 'is the bottle neck'. The call was due to come from someone else in the team. The call didn't come and he is now on holiday. My faith in...

    Hello again

    Hi Everyone,

So I haven't written on here for a while. To be honest I haven't written anywhere, I haven't thought and I haven't felt. It feels weird and slightly stilted coming back here and trying to be honest with myself because I've been doing a really good job of shutting everything off. I want to talk about several things today, to see if can just get back in touch with myself, and with all of you.

    When I say I haven't been thinking I mean - I have this new routine, I get...

  • Will I get Superpowers?
Friday 14 February, LID Day 5

I woke up with a headache this morning. I thought it was caffeine withdrawal and then the other symptoms set in - light-headed, the sweats - and my blood sugar was 3.8.

So coffee and a couple of rice cakes with a teaspoon of raspberry jam, as I was about to have my morning hit of Lantus as well.

I had a moment of panic half way through eating them - raspberry jam = red - and I checked the jar for E127 but everything was fine. Whew!

So far the only things I've found E127 in are some brands of ibuprophim...

Thursday 13 February, LID Day 4

A difficult day emotionally today, so I forgot to take any photos.

As the diet goes, it went pretty well.
I went to bed last night promising myself a lie in, and instead I was wide awake at 5am.
I made myself a coffee and felt sleepy enough to go back to bed at around 8am. I stayed there until nearly lunchtime, so I skipped breakfast and my breakfast insulin.

Lunch was vegetable soup and ryvita with a couple more easy peelers to follow.

Dinner was the chicken chowder minus the cream and salt which worked...

  • A Journey
    Jotting down (8)

Mum left us at 03:25,10th Feb 2014. I am still in a stage of fuzziness. I don’t know this is due to lack of sleep or too much going on last few days.

After received my sister’s phone call, couldn’t go to sleep. Stayed awake whole night. Around 3 clock, made another call to my sister, said mum seems stable. Arrived airport at 4, my daughter went with me. She’s very close to my mum, but cannot make the trip. Its hard on her too. Good job she came back last year for the whole summer holiday....

    Mindfulness and cancer

I've mentioned mindfulness over on the anal cancer forum a few times, and thought it was about time I said something about it in my blog.

I was advised late last summer to try mindfulness by the doctor at Penny Brohn Cancer Care, to help me cope with having a cancer that could no longer be cured.  I'm ashamed to say that I didn't really know at that point what she was talking about, but I got hold of a couple of books, and did a bit of googling to get myself up to speed.  I started by...

    essential thrombothycemia/essential thrombocytosis

I am 25 and have recently been diagnosed with ET. Hematologist was very supportive, and reasured me that I did not have much if anything to wory about (and at the moment only have to go and see him every 6 months)
Trying to understand my diagnosis, and whether it is a primary cause of my sometimes very sleepy day, aches and pains.
Any information - or just to talk would be appreciated.

    Chelle :)
