    Steps Forward

Well finally today I have managed to be rid of my syringe driver and switch to oral medication for pain relief and anti sickness.  This means I am no longer reliant on being at home every day waiting for the 24 hour top ups from the brilliant community nurses.  Work are also in the process of sorting me out a laptop so that i can keep a watching brief but am still some way off going back to work yet as until i get off pain relief totally i cant even drive which is frustrating.  Still a day to remember...

  • BronB's Radiotherapy Journey - treatment to the Salivary Gland
    Day 3 - 27 remaining

This morning we arrived at the hospital with 45 minutes to spare and, having taken advantage of getting a free parking space for the first time, I decided to call into the Macmillan Information Centre. I asked about complimentary therapies and also brought away a leaflet about some therapies that are available locally for cancer patients - so I will definitely be calling them and arranging a session or two.

On the journey to the hospital I had called BUPA to ask about the possibility of switching...

    Today we begin

So finely after a couple of false starts here we are at Southampton general about to begin what we hope will be the end of petes fight. Diagnosed with what is known in layman's terms as testicular cancer in his chest (none in his testicles) in may 2013 Pete underwent 4 lots of bep chemo. Each cycle lasted 2 days, with chemo being administered on days 1-5 & 13. This took us from July through to October & in November tumour was removed. This we had hoped was the end of petes journey. Unfortunately...

  • BronB's Radiotherapy Journey - treatment to the Salivary Gland
Day 2 - met the team and 28 to go
I woke up at 4am this morning and so felt tired due to lack of sleep. I did manage 20 mins exercise (exercise bike and rowing machine) with just fourinternals of exertion and the rest at steady pace. My treatment today took longer, mainly because the imaging machine wouldn't recognise the 'bobbles' on my mask and kept refusing to take images. I had to keep repositioning my hands until the images were completed. I then had my clinic appt where I met my Macmillan nurse (Pauline); my clinician...

  • BronB's Radiotherapy Journey - treatment to the Salivary Gland
    Day 1
Arrived a little before the appointment time. I received my full list of 30 appointments and went for the initial chat with a member of the radiography team. I had the chance to ask any questions and raise any concerns. I didn't have any concerns, but had taken in a few items of skin care that I wished to ask about. The Garnier f50 sunscreen shouldn't be used during treatment (contains aluminium); the Vaseline acts as another skin layer and so holds more of the radiotherapy dose than is required...

How to spot a cancer scam

When I was a student of nutritional therapy, about 15 years ago, I attended a lecture given by Charlotte Gerson, the daughter of Max Gerson, founder of the Gerson therapy.  She was an old lady then, and she must be well into her 90's now.  What I remember of the lecture is that she herself was a rather alarming shade of orange, no doubt as a result of the large amounts of carrot juice that she drinks  Indeed, she did so throughout the lecture, the juice being prepared freshly for her by an assistant...

  • Even more scared second time around.
    It begins again.
Just been diagnosed with breast cancer. I survived cervical cancer in 2004 and this one isn't related. I'm just very unlucky. I had a terrible time before as I was living in Austria and there was no support network. Can't help thinking about how bad it was before even though I have family and good friends here to support me. Also feeling very guilty about putting them all through it again. Xx
