  • Let battle commence! My breast cancer
    My hair is falling out

Got up this morning and having a shower, while washing my hair it came out in a few handfuls. Trying to dry my hair with it falling out was losing a bit of battle but was hoping to have got to the weekend before having to shave it off.

On the other hand, my kids are now very excited as I promised them they could shave it off. The design plans are in fall flow of what styles they are going to do lol. Was hoping to wait until Saturday as was going to invite my parents over so we could have a bit of...

Day 27 - Finding exercises post neck dissection

Last night I decided to do some research into exercises to try and loosen up my neck as I am experiencing some tightness there. I'm also quite 'lumpy' along the scar and the skin is swollen and quite solid/ tight feeling. I found this leaflet from Mount Vernon which has some good exercises.

    http://www.ljmc.org/pi_series/PI47_Physiotherapy_after_Neck_Dissection_Surgery.pdf

I also bought some Aqueous cream from superdrug, a huge pot for about £3. So after the exercises I tried to do some...

    Olympic sleeping champion

After months of finding it almost impossible to sleep, I appear to have skipped to the other end of the spectrum and now can barely keep myself awake. Call me The Sleeper - defender of beds, pillows and nap times! If there's a doze to be had, I'm there! I'll conquer unconsciousness, one snuggled sleep at a time! We're 3 radiotherapy sessions down, 9 to go and I'm still far more upbeat than I've been for weeks. Isn't it crazy what a whole heap of sleep can do for a person? I bet if I hibernated, I...

  • Let battle commence! My breast cancer
    That will teach me!

Having written about my journey so far, how well I thought it was going etc, it all went down hill pretty quickly after my last post.

Wednesday morning I phoned the hospital for some advice as I had been in agony with pain in my neck, back and stomach, high temperature and sweating like a race horse. I was told to come straight in and I didn't come home until Friday night as I was diagnosed with neutropenic sepsis. My oncologist reckoned I had a classic reaction to the injections for boosting the...

    Open mind…

A special lady known to me,

    Refused the boobs obligatory,

And chose a flat chest symmetry,

    In place of bumpy mammary...

She's told breasts are a posh frock must,

And yet I reply, with disgust,

That silhouette is me, my life,

    My possible, after the knife...

I have a friend who challenged the system  by electing for a second mastectomy rather than breast reconstruction, and it wasn't easy to get consent.  I think it is a clever decision, which might suit others...

    Sitrep1

Hey, I'm new to blogging, I'm matter of fact & no-nonsense. The description of this blog sums it up, really.  Except it doesn't tell the whole story.

Back home 2 weeks now, feeling frustrated at not being able/allowed to do what I used to, i.e. to & from nearby Dumfries (25min on bus from home in Dalbeattie) to visit my mother, browse shops, pick up cheaper food etc, and volunteer for Oxfam.  Still, now have something to focus on - radiotherapy for 6 weeks from 13 Aug.

    The op...

    Two Down and a Break

Yesterday was session 2 of radiotherapy. I had asked for morning appointments and they've booked me in for 8am for virtually the rest of them which seemed like a less appealing option until I realised that it actually cut down the waiting by a ridiculous amount. There was still a lot of faffing on. I think it's just in a bit of an awkward place. That morning my name had apparently been changed to Christine. You can tell I wasn't all there, because I turned to Hairy and genuinely checked that Christine...

  • Might have the WC blues
    Woke up this morning...
That's a bonus! I refuse from the start to apologise for my sense of humour. Until I get my results it's business as usual, or so I told my manager at work. Suppose it is really, I'm good in a crisis but haven't really got one yet have I? A few close friends know I might be facing womb cancer (hereafter to be known as WC coz it's a low down, dirty piece of not nice stuff), my two 30-something girls don't, and that works for me. From experience telling people you might have bad news coming means that...

  • 3rd dance with germ cell cancer
Be careful what you wish for
Well my oncologist or is it urologist ( can never remember which one seeing me, i know it wasn't the haematologist as i saw him in the morning) popped his head round the door to give me an update on my treatment, Its still working, yay, but even though i didn't ask what my tumour markers are down to it seems they're still far from normal, but going down. So i took a deep breath and did point out that the original plan for my treatment was three cycles of hdc with stem cell transplant, and was...

  • A two-year experience of Lung Cancer
    Staying Alive

I was diagnosed with terminal, advanced stage 4 non-small cell Lung Cancer nearly two years ago. Leading up to this diagnosis I had been ‘fit and healthy’; I was playing sport and going to the gym two or three times a week. I walked my dog every day up a very steep hill and enjoyed very long walks in the Pennines and the Lake District. I had a great job, which I loved, and a very happy and stable family life.

About a year before my diagnosis, I started getting some pain in my right...
