  • Dad's Bowel Cancer Story
    Dad's op

My dad had an operation to remove the tumour today. It was more severe than they thought from the xrays, and he has had to have his Colon and small bowel removed. He has also been given a temporary stoma and will need to have surgery again in about 6 months.

He is in intensive care this evening, though they are concerned about his breathing.

The last few days before his surgery he was getting really bad, he fell backwards a couple of times and started to get muddled and forget things. Hopefully...

  • Being there for my dad
    The journey so far

    Hi All

My dad was diagnosed with lung cancer in June last year - there were no options for treatment, it is in both lungs and the tubes to the lungs and lymph nodes in the cest. Similar story where he had been going to the doctors for 2 years complaining of shortness of breath and a persistent cough - 2 years down the line they agree to an xray, then a second xray and then the devastating news. Since then they have moved house to be closer to me - they were in Wales, I am in the Highlands...

    New year new treatment
I can't believe it is so long since I put anything on this blog. A lot has happened since. My high dose Methotrexate chemo and the other chemos are now finished. I got through them much better than I expected, no real sickness. Headache and gross fatigue were my only real side effects. I had some reddening of my skin on my face especially where I had had previous e radiotherapy. My hair thinned out a bit and virtually stopped growing. I was well enough to go to my sons wedding on the 17th December...

  • Triple Negative grade 3 Breast Cancer - my journey
    22 January 2013
FEC chemo number 3 under my belt, yay! It was touch and go as to whether I would get to the hospital last Friday after a very heavy snowfall in Cardiff. Having had my chemo delayed the week before due to my low blood count, I was determined to get my chemo! I even googled how long it would take me to walk the route, which was over an hour and with a warning of no public pathways in some areas! I stayed at a friends in Cardiff after my blood test on the Tuesday as snow was forecast and I am so glad...

  • Mum's Ignorance Is Not My Bliss
    Beginning of the End..?

I haven't blogged in ages, I haven't really spoken in ages, in real life or online. The old 'weird' became the new 'norm', life carries on, we simply adjust and adapt and that becomes the way of life.

Questions of mum's health or well-being have been met with an almost unbroken six month continual  answer of...'Ok, not brilliant but, Ok.' This has been the genuine and only stock answer up until yesterday.

Yesterday my honest answer would have been, 'She needs...

    attuned to temperature

Still at home… cross fingers touch wood on day 13 of my third 21 day cycle.

I did pack my bag for hospital late last week as I at last succumbed to the chesty cold my daughter had when at home. I’d held it at bay for a week but eventually I guess it whittled away my resistance and got me.

Of course my temperature jumped up a degree (one learns to be very attuned to temperature). Luckily that was the day the hospital rang me with my 7 day post chemo courtesy call and they suggested...

  • Try to keep positive - it helps!
Motown and icecream - my way of coping!!

In January 2010 I had a hysterechtomy as cancer cells had been found in my womb, just two months after my initial concerns had been treated BRILLIANTLY by my GP.  A few weeks later the tests showed that I didn't need further treatment as it had been detected so early.  NEVER PUT OFF GOING TO YOUR DOCTOR is a lesson that should be learned by everyone.  I took it as a wake up call and started to go to the gym, lost weight and improved my fitness considerably.

In August 2011 I was devastated to learn...

  • Learning to accept my mum's advanced stomach cancer & beyond
    Coming towards the end now

I havent been on here for some time to add a post. After our October 2011 diagnosis of my wonderful mum having 1 year to live with advanced stomach cancer, we enjoyed a really good 9 months of her health improving after a very heavy and intense chemo session from Oct-Jan 2012. We just got stronger and stronger and went on holiday, she returned on 1st October from Lanzarote looking well but her gall bladder (how they found the cancer and impossible to remove) was playing up and getting worse. She...

  • How can I help my Mum's Anxiety?
    My mums cancer journey......
My mum is 58 and in the final stages of life. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian cancer about 21 months ago, she has had a lot of different surgery and chemotherapy but the type of cancer she has is very fast growing and is now resistant to all chemo drugs. She was given about a month to live 3 months ago and is still here at the moment and still suffering :-( What I need help with is her constant fear and panic about the physical part of dying, I feel if I could somehow stop the anxiety she...
