Hi everyone,
My mother has stage four gastro oesophageal cancer, on first diagnosis the doctors at Royal Marsden said it has spread and enlarged her periaorta lymph nodes. They said it was inoperable and incurable. She is only 56 and was the bread winner of our family and the doctor even commented that she doesn’t look like she has stage four cancer.
They started her on palliative chemo ( cisplaitin and Capecitabine) but after three rounds they found that it had spread to her liver and the one in her stomach had also enlarged. They said she could try an immunotherapy trial but again we’re very pessimistic about the possible outcome.
Her cancer team said she would start the treatment in 4 weeks and assured my worried mother that four weeks won’t make too much of a difference to the spread. 4 weeks became 8 weeks due to unnecessary delays made by her cancer team. She had another CT scan and found everything had increased in size and there were now deposited in her lungs. Her doctors do not seem phased by this and has not triggered them to work harder for my mother in fact it seemed to play into their narrative of ‘ there’s not point trying.’
She is now on the trial, but I would just like to know if anyone at all has gone through anything like this? And also if people have any suggestions of what sort of diet can complement immunotherapy. Because I am determined my mother will somehow get through this with or without medical professionals help. If I’m honest they failed from the start.
Thank you for listening
Sorry to hear about your mother. My daughter (aged 37) is on her second course of chemotherapy. We have researched extensively and it is a minefield. We are currently following the Keto diet for her. This is high fat and low carbohydrate content. The oncologist was not keen but my daughter has felt better on it. It would be worth investigating I think. Everything has to be organic which costs a small fortune. We have also had installed a hyperbaric chamber which is supposed to help. The fact of the matter is that chemotherapy is a horrible treatment but cancer is a horrible disease. the Maggie centre at our hospital also has a good range of books to loan including recipe books, it is worth looking if there is one near you as they are very supportive. Best wishes!
Hi, Thanks so much for responding. The keto diet is very interesting - is that supposed to increase the immune system. Also, I saw your other post and you said she's been taking supplements would you be able to tell me what those are?
I agree, I felt so overwhelmed by everything on the internet and no one seems to conclusively say anything works. I'll definitely take a look at the recipe books at the maggie center books, it's ashame they don't offer a nutritional plan alongside with treatment formally.
Sorry for all the questions! And all the best for your daughter!
Hi, My daughter is taking so many supplements it would be impossible to list them. She was following a plan by a Dr Callebout who is supposedly a holistic cancer specialist but I have been sceptical. He promotes fasting days which I struggle with as weight loss is significant with stomach cancer. My daughter is struggling now to actually take the supplements . We have researched things like Mistletoe,& Vitamin c injections. The reviews on these seem quite encouraging. It is difficult to find a nutritionist who is prepared to take on a client with stomach cancer. We are in the North of England and I was surprised to hear that The Royal Marsden have not impressed you as they are supposedly a leading light in cancer treatment. A second opinion was advised to us as well but didn't come to anything different. It is not an easy path to tread!
I’m a nutritionist and happy to help
Hi Debra, I would be encouraged to discuss what you did to become cancer free. Was your stomach cancer suitable for surgery? I will look at Essiac tea and would really like to know about diet. we have been following the Keto regime strictly but I can't say my daughter feels well on it. She did feel well for some time but now she is on the second lot of chemo she is struggling.
