Diaphragmatic hernia after total gastrectomy

Hi,

My husband (now 56) had total gastrectomy in September 2025.  He had a whirlwind of other complications but last week he vomited blood and this took us back into hospital.  He has been diagnosed now with diaphragmatic hernia. I initially was just relieved there was no cancer spread and thought hernias were simple things to be sorted. Although this is proving to be more complex.  He has lost a lot of weight - now 50kg and vomiting and diarrhoea was constant, he’s back to fluid only diet in ward with drips of vitamins etc.  They can’t do no tube due to risk of perforating his bowel. As part of his bowel is now in chest cavity, ventilation needed for anaesthetia will be risky .  The consultants agree he needs surgery to repair but this will be complex and dangerous so ideally they will wait a year as he isn’t really fit for the surgery currently.  But then in the same breath they have said it might come to stage when it’s critical and in that event they will proceed.  We are both terrified.

Has anyone else been through this?

  • Good grief he really has been put through a lot, I hope that they can get him well again, he’s obviously a fighter even though I’m sure it’s an emotional rollercoaster for him and yourselves. I  have a hernia, but they are not in a rush to repair it at the moment, Sending love and hugs x

  • Thanks Sop - He really has had a tough journey. He has been a fighter but tbh I think that’s gone now. He is miserable a lot of the time and has had little quality of life since his operation.  He does try so hard to find moments of joy but over the last 6 months it’s been definitely tough going.
He’s had a non specific hernia above his scar which sort of pokes out but there’s no concern with this one.  That’s why I didn’t initially worry about the CT results showing a diaphragmatic hernia until it was explained how this can be a life threatening situation.
