My father (75) was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with primary lung cancer which has metastasised to the liver. Lung tumour was hiding behind his heart so was not detected on chest X-ray. Later scans showed its  location. 2 blood clots in lung (blood thinners given). Heart surrounded by dangerous level of fluid which was drained (2 pints!!). Breathlessness, fatigue, loss of appetite. Biopsy done 13 days ago from liver. Breathing sorted, discharged home last Monday - sigh of relief, he’s home.. call from Mum yesterday evening for me to go over, need to get him to A&E... breathlessness and extreme jaundice.. CT scan and ultrasound done - BP very low - intravenous fluids & antibiotics given... more scans and blood tests today. Results this afternoon - liver full of tumours, it’s shutting down. Steroids and more fluid given to try and calm an angry liver down. Prognosis : weeks - a couple of months maximum. All this has happened in 3 weeks!!! He was fine at Christmas?! Can’t get my head around it all...

Scared daughter, I am so very sorry to read about your dad. There are no words I can say to soothe your pain or ease your confusion and anger. I am sending you a very big hug, and if I could give it in person I surely would. Perhaps you should contact the Macmillan people at your local hospital, they will do all they can to help not just your dad but you and family to try and get your head around what is happening. Sending you lots of love.

Hi.  I am so sorry to hear this. Daughter also, my mum who is also 75.  Extremely active and capable and diagnosed with probable lung cancer last week.  She was also fine at Christmas. We have had biopsies and PET scans this week and full diagnosis next week. I am shocked at the progression... she was active and moving last Wednesday but seems to be worse and more and more breathless and weak everyday.  This seems to have accelerated since the biopsies on Friday. Did anyone find that the biopsy procedure made them much iller for a while or is this just the progression that we should epect?

Thank you. We were told we only have about 3 weeks now, not months. None of us (including the medical teams) can get heads round the speed this thing is taking over. We’ve got him coming home today, to spend as much time with us and his friends as we can. My brothers wife gave birth last week so he is yet to meet his new granddaughter, although he has seen pictures xx

Hi njdt, I am so sorry to hear what your family is going through. I hope that they are able to offer your mum treatment.

I do not know whether progression of illness is increased after biopsy, only the specialists would be able to advise. I do hope for your mums sake that it is just while the lung is healing from the biopsy site. Fingers crossed you get a swift diagnosis and they can discuss next steps with you.

Thinking of you, your family and your Mum xx

ScaredDaughter I am so so sorry to hear what you are going through.  My 74 year old dad has been diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer and  after chemo and radio that ended in Nov 2019 he seems worse than ever.  We lost my mum on 6th Jan this year so he has had a lot to deal with.  I am the only family member and don't know what to do next for him.  He has had followup scans of chest and head and all seems ok there (not cured but managed for now) but he is sleeping for 15 hours and still not able to function.  I am thinking of you - stay strong
