My Dads neck/throat cancer diagnosis

My dad went to his G.P approximately 12 weeks ago because he had a lump in his neck. He is a very young 65 and other than the lump he looks and feels very healthy albeit tired.

Bloods and xrays were taken and they both returned clear. He was referred to a specialist where they did a biopsy and a scan of his chest. The consultant told him that day that what we are dealing with was very highly likely to be cancer. Then followed and MRI and a PET scan (?) On his return appointment 2 weeks later he was told he did have cancer in both sides of his neck, in his throat and there is something slight showing in his lungs. He now has to go for another biopsy and a camera down his throat.

He has been told that he possibly needs to be fitted for a radiation therapy mask, have teeth removed and will probably need a feed tube fitted because it will be too painful for him to eat normally.

To say we are devastated is an understatement. I am nearly 40 years old but I am very much a 'Daddys Girl' and he is my absolute best friend......

I'm not even sure what I am here to ask.....

I think I just want to hear from people who have had similar experiences and to have some knowledge of what to expect.

Thank you in advance x

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to hear that your dad has recently been diagnosed with cancer. It must be a very difficult time for you both and it's perfectly normal that you want to find out as much as possible about his possible treatment.

Could I suggest that you join the head and neck cancer group as you'll then be able to ask questions and share experiences with others who have this type of cancer.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your dad's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
