The horrors of A&E - and an update on my treatment plan

The swollen arm episode could have happened at a better time, I must say.  My Canadian brother was staying for only 6 days, and two of them we spent mostly in A&E at the local hospital!  In fact at one time we thought we were going to have to say our goodbyes while I was sitting on a trolley covered with monitors, drips etc.  Luckily that didn't quite happen.  Visiting A&E is the most dispiriting experience.  You spend hours and hours siting on a hard chair in a waiting room, in our case half...

    Hospital Bed

Mam got the hospital bed put in the living room, it’s nicer now that people can sit and be with him. Strange but sometimes he doesn’t know what’s going on, and then he sleeps most of the time but I never liked the fact that he was alone in his bedroom.

It’s strange to know that he will never leave that bed again, air compressor buzzing and mam consistently trying to move it to make him comfy, he still manages a sarcky comment for her to leave it alone even tho he gets confused...

    Goodbyes
I got arrived back in Devon late last night. Just in time. My dad had deteriorated again, my brother was struggling on his own. Last night he had a disturbed night, waking for pain relief and cramp in his leg which I massaged. Next time I found him on the toilet, God knows how he got there, he's so weak. He'd not made it in time so we changed the sheets and cleaned him up, transferring him back to bed he could barely get off the toilet even with help. In the morning he was pretty incoherent and couldn...

    The calm after the storm...

So after what felt like weeks of worries, we finally heard my husband's latest scan results!

It had been a hectic week full of work, family stuff and hospital appointments. I had already exhausted every possible outcome of what the scan could show!

After being in the cancer world for over 7 years now, I feel like I can often read a situation on what's happening, so when we were called into the office earlier than planned, of course I panicked! All my possible outcomes of the scans started to...

    Only the Start

My wife has been admitted to our hospital for the start of a range of treatment and tests on her spinal cancer.

She is to have tests to see if there is a primary source of the cancer and this is very worrying for me.

After 5 months of pain in the back an MRI scan found the cancer and I feel so sorry for her that it was not proposed before that would have saved her so much suffering.

Well here we are with a bitter sweet week ahead. Pleased she is getting the treatment but fearful of what may be...

    Ready to leave

Sunday night is the worst night for me. I often lie awake feeling anxiety flood into my body, knowing I won't sleep, trying not give into the urge to cry in case I cannot stop. My boyfriend leaves on Sunday night, late, to drive back to London as he has to work on Monday's. Maybe part of the anxiety is knowing I'm now alone with it all.

Yesterday I started to worry about dad not eating, every time I ask him if he can sip his complan he shakes his head. I don't push it.

    My cousin...

    1st day of radiotherapy

In just over an hour my 16 year old daughter will start her 3 week course of radiotherapy and although we are outwardly taking it in our stride I am feeling physically sick! Its the same sickening feeling when she started chemotherapy and the fear of the unknown. the fear of how she would cope or more importantly How I would care for her! I remain positive and upbeat to the world, well to my family they cant see me break down they must not see the twisting knot of fear in my stomach. I am Mum and...

    Swollen arm

I hadn't intended to update my blog until after our next clinic appointment on Thursday, but something rather strange has happened.  I finished the short course of radiotherapy on my shoulder and neck over two weeks ago, but just yesterday I noticed that my left arm has swollen to double the size of the other one, right down to the hand.  In fact my face, neck and shoulder are all swollen too.  It's a most peculiar feeling, as if I was congested in some way.  Not exactly painful but uncomfortable...

On the way to a decision...

I've got to the point where the choices have been narrowed down to two:

    a.) egg freezing + a full hysterectomy

    b.) full hysterectomy

I am about 90% sure I will go for the latter.

I'm still heart-broken but the depression I was feeling has alleviated *ironically* since the arrival of my period; it's probably the combination of the dust settling and the lessening of hormones that has left me feeling like I can cope with this silent devastation... I call it silent because until now I've never...

    Sundays

Every Friday night I travel from London by car with my boyfriend to my dad's place in Devon, down narrow country roads, to care for him until Monday night.

My oldest brother arrives Monday night to take over dads care. He also travels from London. He takes me to the station so I can go home, back to work and try to recuperate for the few days I have off.

Simon my younger brother travels down on Wednesday night and takes over from Matthew, Matthew gets the train back to London to enjoy some time...
