My Story

Dear Friends My aim in telling my story is to help anyone in the same situation and to answer any questions.Over 2 and a half years ago I had an emergency partial gastrectomy for a adenocarcinoma which was blocking the exit from my stomach.I was a fit 67year old.I stayed in hospital for 4 days and made a good recovery.Six weeks later I started chemotherapy.I only completed 5 of the planned 6 cycles because of extreme fatigue. The chemotherapy also caused an extensive DVT so I was reduced to a painful hobble. As the cancer had spread to a great many lymph nodes I was told that a cure was very unlikely. However within a year of treatment I was able to run a marathon and now moving towards 3 years post op I feel fine and full of energy.I believe in exercise for wellbeing and good health.

Living without a stomach is much more complicated than just eating small meals and my body is still adjusting.I have felt that stomach cancer is a forgotten cancer with very little follow up.Thank you Macmillan.

  • What a wonderful positive story! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for such an uplifting story! My husband has stage 4 stomach cancer, incurable according to experts. Although he’s lost a lot of weight he’s generally well still and having chemo. We’re hoping for a miracle and your story has given me hope!

     Thanks so much x

Good luck and best wishes to you both. Two years before I was diagnosed with stomach cancer my husband had oesophageal cancer which sadly couldn’t be cured. It was a time of great anxiety and stress.Strangely I have had no such worries with my own cancer. On the particularly dark days I phoned Macmillan and spoke to the most charming nurses.I seem to remember that we discussed many subjects except cancer.I always felt better afterwards.I will be thinking of you.
