Both parents had cancer

Last year my mum found out she had uterus cancer which was devastating for me. Luckily after having surgery she didn’t need any further treatment and is going for regular checkups so hopefully the treatment won’t be needed in future but it is still on my mind that she might. I understand she was very lucky with this compared to other people.
This year my dad found out he had TCC kidney cancer. I was still not coping well with what my mum had been through when he found out and again it was a massive shock. He has had surgery to remove the kidney and is awaiting results of biopsies and to find out if he needs further surgery but the surgeon was hopefully it hadn’t spread.

i am really struggling to cope with the fact both my parents have been through this in such a close time to each other and it is affecting my mood and relationships with other people. I often find myself angry when people are moaning about problems in their life that seem trivial compared to what me and my family have been through.
I also feel paranoid that since both my parents have had cancer me or another family member might get it too.
Does anyone have any advice on how to cope with this?

  • Hi ,

So sorry to hear about both your parents and the effect it is having on you. Cancer is really very common but often people find it so difficult to talk about and so people often don't. If might help to talk to one of our cancer support specialists who can discuss and change in risk to you or to others in case they are possible genetic links. If you call 0800 808 0000 any time between 8am and 8 pm you can discuss this with one of our professionals who can hopefully help you to form a plan to go forward. Do post on here too anytime you feel the need as someone is always listening.

    <<hugs>>
