My dad was diagnosed with Grade 4 Glioblastoma just after my mum beat NHL

Hi all,

I don’t know what to say really. But I feel like this is a safe space for me to just get things off my chest.

My mum was diagnosed with High Grade Non Hodgkins Lymphoma back around December 2019. It was awful news to hear but her treatment seemed to go really well and she didn’t really have any side effects (apart from hair loss - but we got her some cool wigs that she loved and it never bothered her). Then we had the amazing news about a month ago that the cancer seemed to be completely gone! They just wanted to do a few rounds of radiotherapy to make sure it was gone and really minimise the chance of it coming back.

The  about 3 weeks ago my dad started acting a bit funny. He seemed to be talking gibberish and one hot day he had a dizzy spell and a pounding headache. After a call to 111 they told me to take him to A&E to get a CT scan. The scan came back showing what the thought was abscesses. So they kept him in overnight, but he was able to come home after being pumped full of antibiotics and steroids.

He was transferred to the specialist Neuro oncology department in Nottingham a week later where they did a biopsy. Then yesterday we found out that it was Grade 4 Glioblastoma... not abscesses.

It’s not curable and they said prognosis is maybe 16 months if we’re lucky. My heart is broken. My dad is my best friend and I can’t imagine losing him so young. He’s only 53! I don’t know what to do or who to turn to. I’m just hoping to reach out to people who get it. Maybe someone is going through something similar and has tips on coping with it all?

  • Jenny I'm so sorry to hear about the difficult time you are having with both parents .  I lost my eldest sister to a GBM4 eight years ago,  As you know it's a very serious type of brain tumour.  Do they have a treatment plan in place for him?
