This is my first post. My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 testicular cancer just over 4 weeks ago. They took him straight in to start chemo. He went back in for his second round of chemo yesterday and will be in for 4 days. This time I’m such a mess and feel so low and emotional I can’t visit him to due Covid restrictions. This is the worse time ever does it get better?

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to Family and Friends, although I'm sorry to hear about your husband. Yes, it does get easier. You're in the very early days. A cancer diagnosis is always a shock and to get a stage 4 diagnosis is more so. When my husband was diagnosed with 3 different cancers in quick succession I went into meltdown so, believe me, your reaction is completely normal. It takes time to get your head around the whole cancer thing and with a teenage son in lockdown you've already got a lot on your plate. Allow yourself this space to grieve the diagnosis; it helps somehow just to acknowledge that you feel a wreck. I wrote in a journal to get it out of my head and onto paper and it helped, but I needed to cry too and once I allowed myself to do that (I cried when I walked the dog and as we live in the country it was easy to do it without being seen) things settled a bit. One of our members said she went into bathroom for a cry then put her armour on again and I thought that was a good way of putting it.

Do what you can in these lockdown times to pamper yourself, even if that's just a warm bath with some lovely products. I'd suggest perhaps you get some meals ready in the freezer for when he comes home in case he needs your time and to make it easier on you. And, every now and then, give yourself a hug. I used to cross my arms over my shoulders when I felt at my worst, it's surprising how much it helps.

    Love and hugs,
