Struggling to inform others

Hey all,

It's been only a few days since my mum has been diagnosed and I'm still try to process the infomation myself while supporting her and ensuring she has everything she needs. I'm currently informing family members one at a time and thankfully one of my brothers has offered to come with me to tell others (as i beleive it is better to do this face to face)

My current dilemma is this: my twin brother does not yet know and i hate keeping it from him.  However, to tell him there are many things i have to consider. He is not emotionally stable. He has recently had issues with alcohol and drugs. He has attempted suicide several times this year alone. Every time he breaks up with a partner it is as if his world has ended ans he struggles a lot with it. He is the only family member that lives on his own and is the furthest away from our mum. He doesn't have a support network outside of the family that i know of. He is curenty going through a break up and is mid-meltdown and i feel this may push him over the edge.

I'm hoping someone may have some ideas or suggestions as to how talk to him about it. I've been told our mum has less than 4 months and i don't want to delay or lie to him about it for longer than is needed. Any suggestion may help.

Thank you

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear that your mum has recently been diagnosed with cancer. It must be an incredibly hard time for you all.

I don't have any suggestions about how you could break the news to your twin but thought it might be a good idea to give the Macmillan Support Line a call on 0808 808 0000 and speak to one of their advisers. Hopefully, they'll be able to give you some tips. It's free to call and they're available daily from 8am to 8pm.

Alternatively you could post your question in ask an information and support adviser and someone will get back to you within 1 working day.
