My brother has a terminal bone cancer and is undertaking chemo and marrow transplants, he has a young family, but my worry is my 14 year old son whose mother has also recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which has spread to her liver already. This is terminal and has a very poor prognosis. He lives with me and his step-mother, and has done for several years, and sees his mother only monthly at best but he is very loyal to her and does miss her. He is struggling being 14, struggling to communicate with others and now has some serious emotional trauma to understand.

I do know he is very upset about his mum, but she has her own communication issues, and does not end up telling us much, and leaves my son and i in the dark, although she does care about him.

I want to support him, but i think he might need one to one counselling, as i worry i am not doing enough/the right things for him. does anyone have any ideas about national services or services in West Sussex near us? i think with this disease circling him, and an already complex family situation it will be hard to process in a blog or phone call.

Also any tips on getting him on board would be great, as i don't think he would want to address all this head on.

  • Hi , sorry to hear about what you have all being going through. In your circumstances I would suggest your best bet would be to phone the helpline here 0808 808 0000, it is open 8am-8pm 7 days a week and they will have more information available relative to your location and circumstances.

    Hi

I'm sorry to hear of everything your son is going through and I wonder if this would be of any interest to you

    Maggie's Emotional support for teenagers

As you live in West Sussex the nearest

Maggies Centres to you are at Sutton and Southampton you would need to contact each centre to see if they run emotional support groups for teenagers.

I hope this of interest and you are able to find emotional support for your son.

    Regards

    Ian

Thanks, I have phoned and had good advice. I have a local family support charity "cancervive" which have contacted me and offered a visit who I found on the Macmillan site. I also have got a few different leaflets which were also available on the Macmillan site, and we will have a look at riprap.org.uk which concentrates on teens.

    Thanks for the support
