Hi
just had an honest chat with my dad who has been diagnosed with incurable bowel cancer. He is 92 and a bit confused with any info about diagnosis, support and care so it’s hard to work out what to do. He’s told me he has til Christmas and what is most upsetting is he wants to clear out his sheds and house before he dies.
I don’t know how to approach this? Should I take time off work and go to him to get it done? I am scared as to how I can possibly pack up his life? I don’t know how to get him support?
Dear Smsc, has your dad been referred to palliative care services or local hospice. If not this can be arranged by his general practitioner. As for his prognosis that is not an exact science so it’s possible he may live beyond Christmas. I don’t think the solution to this dilemma is to clear out his house, he needs professional support to make sure he receives good end of life care. If possible I would try to go with your dad to see his general practitioner and talk things through. If he is confused he needs support to make the right decisions.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
