Hi all, dont no where to start,  I'm devastated my moms been diagnosed with lung cancer. She also has severe copd. She was admitted to hospital due to having a chest infection back in December the consultant she seen then ordered her to have a repeat xray in 6 weeks due to something showing up on the original xray. When she had the repeat xray it was still showing so they requested a ct scan we was told by the consultant she was 95% this was lung cancer but because of moms copd they couldn't do a biopsy, next step would be to have a pet scan to see if there was any other cancer in her body. We went to the pet scan on Friday and due to my mom suffering a panic attack and getting chlosterphobic they was unable to perform the scan and said she wouldn't be able to try again as she wouldn't be able to lie still for how long they needed her to. I'm now unsure what they will suggest next for us to get any answers. I have to call moms consultant Tuesday. Anyone had a similar experience? What other tests could they try? Xx

  • Hi and welcome to the community, though sorry to hear about your mum.

My wife has had a lot of scans and she has not found a PET-CT really much different to an ordinary CT, is it possible the scan your mum had problems with was actually an MRI, my wife hates them and lots of people have panic attacks when they have them.

I would guess though that lots of the decisions that need to be made will be tinged with the copd, my  wife's cancer is in her lung but is metastatic leiomyosarcoma; the first chemo she had caused a lung to collapse,

What perhaps might help you right now is probably to talk to someone about how you feel because in all this you getting the support you need is really important, well done for coming here you might like to look at our pages on I'm looking after someone with cancer

Hi Steve, thank you for your reply. My moms scan was a pet ct scan it was in a mobile unit based at our local hospital. Due to her breathing problems caused by the copd she cant lie on her back for very long without struggling which is when she started to panic. They showed her what was expected of her before using the dye. She found it to uncomfortable and wouldn't be able to remain still for that long. She has had a ct of the chest which she was fine with, this took about 10 minutes and took place inside hospital in a much more bigger sized room so she didn't feel chlosterphobic. I think she panics when things are close to her face and the pet scan was a full body scan. I am hoping maybe they could just do ct scans of other areas to check to see if cancer is anywhere else...I'm.unsure they offer this I need to speak with the consultant tomorro. Sorry to hear about your wife, sending hugs x
