He’s just been diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma & starts chemo next week, am feeling helpless, what’s the best way to support him? Also, he hasn’t told our Mum yet as he wanted to wait for definite news rather than worry her through the diagnosis process ( she’s 88) I know he’s stressing about how to tell her, any advice please?

  • Hi and welcome to the community though sorry to hear about your brother, NHL is not my expereince as my wife's is very different but you can find lots of information here that might help you understand what he might be talking about sometimes and if you want miore information you can post in General Discussion where there will be people at all stages of treatment.

Perhaps the most common requst from people with cancer though is "treat me normally" - some say laughter is the best medecine of all though on chemo there may be some down days.

On the telling your mum, being aremed with facts can be helpful, he mght like to look at talking about cancer and while it might be a bit of a shock it might well be she knows something is not right and it might help to know what is really happening

  • Hi  and a second welcome to the Community.

I am Mike and I was diagnosed with my type of Non Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1999 so I totally understand the journey your brother is on.

The General NHL Forum link that my friend Steve gave you is is a good place to start. There are over 80 types of Lymphoma but we do have a few specific forums for the largest groups. If know the exact type he has you can also join any of the groups below.

    Follicular Lymphoma

    Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma

    Mantel Cell Lymphoma

    T-Cell Lymphoma

Just join the group(s) and hit the 'Start a Discussion' tab and introduce yourself to the group and remember to go to the right on the group home page and select how you want to receive email notifications when someone answers your posts.

You can see my story at . It would be good to put some information into your profile as it really does help the Community members to help you and get to know you.

Click on your username and that will take you to your homepage. Look for ‘Edit my Profile’ click on it and start to tell us as much or as little about yourself as you want then click on save before closing the page.

If you could also find out his exact treatment regime come back with that on the NHL Forums as we can help more with this information.

Be assured that blood cancer are very treatable, yes, the treatment can be hard but once treatment goes into the blood it melts growth areas away and blood cancer are nothing like solid tumour cancers.

I will keep an eye open for you.

We can walk this with you.

Thanks so much highlander, his type is follicular so I will look at the links you have given me. Was in bits reading your story , can’t believe what you have been through. So glad you have come through it and can now advise others, it seems such a mountain at the moment but reading about you has given me so much hope, thank you

  • So pleased that my little story has given you some hope. The folks on the FL group are great. Have a look at some of the treads but the best way to get support is by starting your very own thread,

I will keep my eyes open for you,

    ((hugs))
