Hi. My mum has bowel cancer and has been told today that there is nothing they can do to help her now. The diagnosis came just after Christmas and here we are 4 months later being told it’s a waiting game. It’s horrendous and my sister and I are distraught. We want to do something- anything! and had the idea of going away somewhere. Probably in the UK, to give her a change or scenery and us all a chance to spend some time together. Does anyone know of anywhere we can go? She can walk but not far. I’m not sure if there is anything in particular she’d like to do, would quite like to be a partial surprise, so open to suggestions. Is there anywhere that offers rooms and food and maybe crafts/treatments with nice gardens to sit in?

Thanks in advance. X

    Hi

I am sorry to hear about your mum and what a nice idea to take her away.

There are lots of wonderful places in the UK. Is there somewhere she has an emotional attachment to such as a childhood holiday destination? That might be worth thinking about.

There is a hotel in Bournemouth set up specifically for people living with cancer. I’ve not tried it myself but I hear good things.

For what it’s worth, my brother in law’s mum had a waiting game with incurable bowel cancer that lasted ten years.  She said she was old and her cells were growing slowly - including the cancer cells. Something else got her in the end - and well into her 80s.

    Xx

    Thank you for your reply.

Thats brilliant to hear it could be a while before the worst happens. Have to admit I’m a little pessimistic at the moment, mum is only 59 and in a lot of pain. But we have to be positive.

I will definitely look into the Bournemouth place and ask her about childhood holidays. Thank you.

    Hi Lucy

It's nice that you want to give mum a holiday and being positive is certainly the way to go having something to aim for and look forward to can be a tonic in itself.

I came across this Holidays for People with Cancer - Disabled Holidays
    https://m.disabledholidays.com

See information below to start a search.

And thought it might be of interest but it does depend on where you live and how far mom can travel

Lucy this is such a good idea we all want to know if you go, where you go and how you get on. Photographs are always nice to see.

Being positive for you and mom have a very happy holiday.

    Keep in touch.

Being a bit bias there in nothing wrong with Edinburgh if you like a busy city with a lot to do where else could you find a place that has tartan everywhere and some hotels you can even be wakened by the sound of a man in tartan trying to play the bagpipes. Edinburgh the city that was so ingenious that they even built a castle next to the railway station!

Have I sold Edinburgh well Mike without a doubt I am a true ambassador for Edinburgh tourism!

  • Hi , on the back of your reply from my friend , I could not resist doing my bit for Scottish Tourism...... but it all depends on how far you want to go, but staying in the UK is the best way forward as you would have great difficulty getting insurance to go out with the UK.

The Borders of Scotland with is beautiful stately homes and rolling country side is great.

Keep clear of Edinburgh and Glasgow as its all very busy.

But the area around Highland Perthshire based at Pitlochry with its tea shops, theatre, salmon ladder, lochs and big trees is wonderful.

Our our neck of the woods in the Highlands around my home city of Inverness, the amazing scenery with Loch Ness 10 minutes from the centre of Inverness or another 15 mins to see the Dolphins play in the Black Isle.

Or maybe the Lake District - amazing place.

Where every you all go have a great time.

That all sounds amazing! We are on Devon/Dorset border, I love the Lake District and suggested it to mum but she said no, though I’m not sure if that’s due to distance or the fact she won’t be able to see it in its glory. She used to be a keen walker and cannot do that anymore.

We will persevere as she seems a little negative about the idea at the moment.

Thank you for the idea though, I may have to go myself if mum isn’t keen.

    Thanks
