  • The Butterfly Who Flapped Too Hard
    I'm in the club!

(This one was written back in Jan/Feb 2013, but I had nowhere to post it)

It's official! I've passed all the tests and background checks, and I've been allowed into one of the most exclusive clubs in the world. To get in, the tests were really invasive and intrusive, and for a while it looked like I wasn't going to get in. But then, after one last check that was the most probative yet and which I had to fight hard for, they found what I had been missing and I was allowed in!

    So...

    End of Chemo

I had my last chemotherapy yesterday and I thought I'd feel elated.  Being treated at an outreach centre the nurse apologised for  not having a bell for me to ring but I don't feel like ringing bells.

It still seems like a very long road to travel with further surgery and radio therapy taking me into at least June.

Am I unusual in this or are you feeling the same?

I do feel some relief and hope that once I get through the next couple of weeks I may feel less tired but it certainly doesn't feel...

    How and why?

Two weeks ago I lost my father to oesophageal cancer.

I'm in a state I have never been in before. I feel envious of old people as my dad was only 57 years old and had so much to give...

My dad's diagnosis was in late December 2016 - we lost him 1st of March (St.David's day) 2017. We were never told it would be this quick.

I'm 23 years old and my life has fallen apart - I worry constantly about my mum and my to sisters and even though I'm the youngest I feel the responsibility now lies...

I got to the end of the Chemo!

    Wednesday 15th March 2017.

Yesterday I had my last chemo session of the 3xFEC and 3xT. I still can't believe there are no more chemo sessions. I was very worried that it would be delayed because of my bloods not being good enough, but in fact they were very very good this time, every thing was good, kidneys, liver, blood oxygen etc, blood pressure. I was very pleased to get it done. Still three weeks to carry on with the infection control regime, taking temperature every morning but after the...

    Birthday Boy! (well nearly)

    It’s my birthday tomorrow. 58!

And I’m sat here at 2:32 in the morning contemplating what a difference a year makes. This time last year I was a very scared person. I was in pain and had a thousand and one thoughts about what was going on in my body to make me feel so dreadful.

One year on and now I know. I’m still scared but I understand what was happening. I’ve been through chemotherapy and major surgery and have come out the other side relatively intact (well minus the bits the surgeon...

    One day at a time

Hi Ikeep telling myself"one day at a time", most days that's what keeps me going.

I'm thankful that 12 months on and two different types of cancer I'm still here.

" I shouldn't complain there are so many others in a worse situation than I am, be grateful, pull yourself together, stop being selfish" I hear myself telling myself.

But some days it doesn't feel like that, some days I feel angry for no reason, I forget that having invasive surgery IS treatment...

    Malnutrition

To coincide with national Nutrition and Hydration week, I thought it would good to share with you Ryan’s experience of malnutrition as a result of his lymphoma diagnosis.

Malnutrition is a common problem among patients with cancer, affecting up to 85% of patients with certain cancers. In severe cases, malnutrition can progress to cachexia, a specific form of malnutrition characterised by loss of lean body mass, muscle wasting, and impaired immune, physical and mental function.
