I knew this was going to be tough but I was really not prepared for how bloody awful it is. Before Pete died I tried, I really tried to prepare. I read the posts on the bereaved spouses group. I tried so hard to be ready for the worst when it came, but I now realise that you simply cannot imagine what it is going to be like. The absolute, awful finality of it. For the first few days I don't think it sunk in, despite me crying about it daily for the previous 3 months. I was in kind of daze, doing...
Today it's exactly a week since he went. At 8 am I was for the first time lying on his side of the bed. I had no choice, as my elderly terrier had leaked all over my side while I was letting the other dogs out. Perhaps that was fate, but it made me feel closer to him. So, that's a week of firsts over with, first Tuedsay, Wednesday ....first week without him.
Although it is a week since he died, the last 10 days were so awful that I had really lost him when he went into hospital. I haven...
Introduction
In August 2015, I was diagnosed with tongue cancer, and have been treated with surgery and radiotherapy. This blog focusses on the role of the JEJ tube in my treatment, which I was told is unusual in head and neck cancer cases. Please feel free to ask / comment about this or any other aspect mentioned below.
I’m now several weeks post radiotherapy, have stopped feeding through the JEJ, and am waiting for a green light for it to be removed. Given that the use of a JEJ for Head & Neck...

What a complete pain! I hear you can get stoma bags with valves on them to help relieve gas build up (and I find the usual filters in normal bags somewhat pointless/non-functional). But I've yet to get my hands on any, and, as such am in the situation where I can be going to the toilet literally every 10 minutes or so to empty sometimes hardly any poo, but a bagful of wind!
My gut is being very loud and gurgly. Output is sometimes thick, but tends to get very fluidy when I've drunk a lot, and...
Pete passed away at 8 am on Monday, March 14th. I was with him, talking to him, kissing him. Just me and him as he always wanted us to be when he was alive. I have varied between numbness and truly profound sadness since. I really never knew anything could hurt this much.
Cancer is a nasty little bugger that sneaks in the back door when you least at expect it.
It’s cruel and doesn’t care who it hurts and when it hurts.
You take our loved ones or make them ill, and you don’t care how you take them.
So now we are fighting back.
You’re not going to hurt our family and friends anymore.
We are stronger and wiser and we will fight you all the way.
So we say good-bye cancer and a big hello to life.
