Hello everyone,
Although I don’t have a diagnosis of VIN or cancer as yet, and hope not to, I hope you don’t mind me asking for advice here.
I’m 67 and have had erosive vulvitis for about 10 years. It comes in flares and can be very severe. Dermovate ointment has been my mainstay and using hydromol ointment as a soap substitute and salve, and Dermol 600 in the bath. I use regular sitz baths too. I do absolutely everything I can to cope but in the last few months the pain and soreness have become so much worse and Dermovate isn’t controlling it at all. I can only sit on a special cushion and can’t possibly wear trousers. Even tights and underwear feel unbearable and I clockwatch to see when I can decently strip off and hide under a nightie and dressing gown! I’m Sure many of you can identify.
I’ve recently been referred to a Gynaecologist- a Dermatologist has taken care of me up until now - and she will be doing a vulvoscopy and vulvar biopsy on January 2nd. Her main concern is that because the condition is no longer responding to the steroid cream and is more painful, it is suspicious of cancer.
I know others will empathise but has anyone experience a worsening of symptoms that don’t respond to treatment any more? Also, it hurts terribly when I wee and that’s a new symptom for me and I feel as though I want to go all the time. I do have UTI’s with similar symptoms but I definitely don’t have one at the moment and this pain is a different level entirely.
I’m feeling pretty desperate at the moment. Because I have mobility problems I have to sit most of the time and am a wheelchair user out of the house. It doesn’t help the pain! Also, I’m waiting for a date for further surgery to remove my thyroid as I was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer this year. I can’t imagine trying to struggle with this trouble as well as the operation in a Head and Neck Ward. It’s so difficult to talk about and explain.
iIf anyone could offer any tips on helping with this horrible pain I’d be so grateful. Reading your posts I’m in awe of how you cope with what you go through.
Many thanks in advance

Hi Kit1952
I'm sorry to hear how much discomfort you're in at the moment and that you've recently developed a new symptom.
As your appointment with a gynaecologist isn't for another few weeks it would probably be best to see your GP and explain to them how much pain you're in along with your new symptom. Hopefully they should be able to sort something out for you.
Do come back and let us know how you get on.

Thank you very much for your reply. I appreciate it. My GP is very sympathetic and referred me to the gynaecologist very quickly. She says she’s unable to suggest anything to help yet and the gynae said she needs to have the results of the biopsy. Meanwhile I’m continuing to use the Dermovate. I guess I’m anxious that my existing problem has now advanced to VIN or cancer but I know I have to be patient.
Thank you again and I will let you know how things go. Have a good Christmas xx
Hi Lisa,
Thank you so much for responding to my post and for your kindness.
I had three biopsies taken on January 2nd and expect the results at the end of the week. On the 10th I went into hospital to have a thyroidectomy and have found it really difficult with the aftercare of the area since the biopsy and stitches, being on a surgical ward and being unable to mobilise because of my disability.
I will let you know what the results are. When I read about all you yourself have gone through and still go through, my problems pale into insignificance.
Thank you again
