I have eventually managed to get the nurse to track down my husbands pet scan results from 15 th jan , they were not in a hurry to look at them or call us,. Basically the consultant sent the images to the cancer nurse to relay to us. She said the consultant is not overly concerned with the pet scan results , wee bit of heat showing in places but she had not had time to fully assess the results with radiology colleages. She was going to do that yesterday , but never said if we would hear anymore from them or do any further tests. I don’t feel fully satisfied that they have explained if they think the treatment has worked or not. My husband says leave it and take it as good news , but I need to have a face to face apt with the consultant to put my mind at ease. Am I expecting too much , am I worrying about nothing , I just feel in limbo and my husband wants to move on and forget about it.
Pet scans often throw up minor signs that don't lead to anything...mine showed a prostate shadow even though my treatment was for tonsil and lymph node cancer..after further tests it was proved it was only an issue with the scan... your husband is right when he says take the good news that nothing major has been highlighted..
Good luck
Chas
I totally understand how you feel, after my latest PET scan (13 weeks after treatment] the consultant said there was a light red area showing up on my lymph nodes but said that was what they would expect to see in someone that was recovering from radiotherapy there. Then in the letter that was send on to my local gp it said about the area and said that it ‘may’ be related to radiation damage.
‘May’ isn’t really good enough for me in this situation!?
Hi Curly. That all sounds a bit too relaxed for me but perhaps that's not what was intended and it's just been relayed in a bad way.
I had an avid PET/CT at 16 weeks so I know how you are feeling. I had a biopsy to follow and thank heavens no cancer was found. If it was me I would want a F2F to clarify. It's the "not had time to fully assess with radiology colleagues" that would irk me.
Having said all that false positives are really common which is why these scans are being done later and later, so you probably have little to worry about.
Hope everything is OK and let us know if you feel up to it?

Base of tongue cancer. T2N0M0 6 weeks Radiotherapy finished January 2019
Hi
I think I would also want them to do a face to face consultation. My pet ct scan wasn’t done until 18 weeks to alleviate hopefully the possible hot spots. My oncologist even during covid wants to impart the news face to face. Your hubby’s gone through treatment in my opinion he deserves a full explanation. Not a comment that radiological people haven’t had time !
Cancer is getting a raw deal in these covid time s patients need explanations.

Hi Curlywurly
I agree with you, I would definitely want a face to face so I could fully understand what the results mean. I know it would nag at the back of my mind until I heard from the experts. At least then you and your husband can put it behind you and get on with life.
Best wishes for your husband’s ongoing recovery.

As many have said the PET/CT can show up other issues aside from cancer. That said I think the words the clinical team are using to you are not reassuring. Personally I would go with a telephone call with the consultant after the MDT review, but I appreciate some feel the need for a F2F.
Whichever way you and your husband need the clarification and assurance to help you understand and live with the consequences of the cancer. Just having that will help to put your mind at ease and focus on the joys of life.
Evening curly ,
I,m with you on this one.at the very least you want a face to face with the consultant.
Get your questions together, thereafter you can both move on and concentrate on getting your hubby back to full health.
Telephone appts with GPs is wearing a bit thin now, and for me a total non starter with your oncologist.
You need that assurance ,but you may have to be persistent with his secretary
Good luck
