    Me and my story

Where do i start, Up until a month ago i was happy and enjoying life. I lived with my husband and just found out we were expecting our first child. A baby something i always wanted and here it was.

We went along to my first scan really excited - didnt know what to expect but just wanted to see our little baby inside me. The nurse rubbed this cold jelly over my tummy and pressed down with her machine. Me and my husband hand and hand watched the screen, then the nurse stopped moving and said she woulod...

    NHS Woes it seems

I have got to the bottom of why and how there was a mix up over the day Sal was to have her Hickman Line fitted...

At Derriford they prefer to use PICC lines and they are the normal fitting for people that need a central line. However, because of Sal's particularly difficult veins she needed a Hickman line. When the appointment was made it was assumed she needed a PICC line and so was put onto the PICC line list for Friday. However, unbeknown to her, she was also put on to the Hickman line list...

    Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Last night Sal noticed, for the first time, that her hair was coming out. Not in huge clumps yet but definitely coming out whenever she ran her fingers through it. So, it has to come off.

So, I got outthe clippers and put on the number 3. I have to say that Sal might have been prepared for cutting her hair off before it fell out but I found that I wasn't quite so prepared. I had reservations immediately prior to starting to clip. What if her hair doesn't fall out? We would be cutting it for no reason...

    Hickman Line Fitting

On leaving hospital on Tuesday Sal was given an appointment card detailing when her Hickman Line fitting would be done. She was told tomorrow, Friday.

This morning we received a call from the hospital at 9:20 saying they were expecting her in this morning and she had to get to the hospital by 10:30 or it would have to be cancelled! Sal was still in bed! Sal was now in a difficult position... try to get to the hospital in time or not have the line fitted for potentially another 2 weeks. Bearing in...

More scans than a supermarket checkout...

Having had my biopsy result confirmed it was time to undertake a round of scans to see the extent of the problem.

I'm blogging my experience of the scans for anyone who is about to jump on the roller-coaster ride that is cancer treatment and who may wonder what lies ahead. Unlike the others, this blog is more factual than a reflection of my emotions.

Round one was a MRI scan.

The machine was a long, thin cylinder that I laid inside. The table was raised so that my nose was close to the top...

My chemo journey - soft tissue sarcoma

    05/05/10

I have now completed my 4th, and final (for now) chemo.  I had a blood transfusion at the start of the last treatment, and must admit that it was a great help.  I was able to keep at least reasonably active for the 4 days I was in hospital and even managed to understand the book I was reading.

I returned home for my 3 days bedrest on Saturday, and my husband ensured that I had plenty of fruit juice to drink.  The last time I had chemo I made the mistake of becoming dehydrated, and I cannot...

    April 2010

April was full of ups and downs, a real roller-coaster of emotions.

Had a good easter but deprived of easter eggs due to my fitness and diet programme in a desperate attempt to get fit for my holiday. Then dropped to an all time low when holiday was cancelled due to the Islandic volcano.

Then, back up because the weather was so lovely.  Back down when Mum became very ill and ended up in hospital due to a virus.

April ended on an up because I have managed to rebook my holiday and am now due to...

    Take two

August 2009 - take call from mum in car on way back ffrom working in Shropshire. Mentions she has had ultrasound on lumps in neck as she'd been getting a lot of pain in her lymphatic arm. Also has nasty rash on back that won't shift. "Don't worry they don't think its cancer". Great. (nb: Mum had breast cancer 7 years ago but was out of her remission period and had been given all clear 2 years previously)

Following week secondary breast cancer confirmed in lymph nodes, skin...
