A bit off topic but it may be a cautionary tale..  You may sometimes in your life try Voltarol Gel  for   pain relief . I have had back pain and constipation  before and after diagnosis of Prostate and have steadily increased dose until I thought it had become ineffective  Googled   Can Constipation cause back pain and it said  yes due to straining  . I looked up Voltarol side effects and it did not mention Constipation. I also looked up Diclofenac its chemical name and it said  commonly  can cause constipation. Also I take Atorvastatin which also can cause constipation.

So stopped taking both and next day back pain and straining  to poo had magically ceased. Wish I had looked up Diclofenac back in January and a lot of  problems may have been avoided. Will adjust my medication as I explore more on this topic. Statins always seem to have Constipation as side effects. Have been trying  Movelat Relief as a substitute for Voltarol but don't rate it so highly but is the only Nsaid that doesn't include Constipation as a side effect . Movelat is based on Salicylic acid (Aspirin) and seems to be only available from Boots. Hope this all makes sense but had been increasing Voltarol which increased Constipations so defeating its object. Catch 22 situation.

  • Try Fybogel once or even twice a day after meals for constipation. It's very cheap, less than £4 for 30 sachets in our local pharmacy.

  • I was on dicolfenac/voltarol suppositories for years.  Finally being taken off them at about age 67 as they can cause heart problems in older men so studies show.  They were the only things that touched my neck and back pain which are long standing work related injuries and then later the arthritis pain in my feet, knees and hips.  Now taken off all NSAID's because of Atrial Fibrillation so hard to do anything with pain now.  Anyway, I digress.  All the time I was on the voltarol (also on other pain killers like Co-proxamol)  and was prescribed fybogel to go with them and also omeprazole to avoid constipation and stomach ulcers whilst on them.  I still occassionally use voltarol gel as don't get any of the side effects from that that I had with the tablets and then suppositories.  BTW any painkiller usually has a bad effect on stomach lining and anything with Co for codeine also causes constipation - easy to remember that co for constipation!

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO READ THE MEDICATION LEAFLET AND ASK YOUR PHARMACIST ABOUT SIDE EFFECTS FROM MEDICATION.

    All the best.

Hi, In searching for an Nsaid without Constipation side  effects I came across Movelat Relief Gel. Not strictly an Nsaid as it has overtones of Complementary Medicine and not nearly as good as  Voltarol tested on my dicky knee as it doesn't last as long   Contains Salicylic  Acid ( Aspirin).  Have only found it at Boots the Chemists.  Could be useful in some applications. Have discontinued it today as might be causing intermittent blockage of  my Eustachian tube linked with Aspirin as many years ago had nasal polyps. A strange connection but that's what it says.

Hi Seamas, Will keep it in mind. Think I've seen it in Supermarkets.  Was prescribed it after I had a Hernia done about 10 years ago.. Can't remember much about using it. Incidentally  while straining after Constipation caused by Codeine I  can feel my Hernia patch  when I walk as it must have moved slightly. While carrying out a literature research found that  the much lauded Fibre for constipation does not respond to OIC (Opiate Induced Constipation). Not a lot of people know that ! Or want to !

Hi, just had to look up Chinese Wood Lock Oil. As its name implies is a Chinese Medicine  also called Wong to Yick (I think I've got that right ). Think Amazon sell it.  Many, many,  years ago had back  problems and visited an Osteopatth who tried acupuncture with setting alight the heads of the pins. Found that in my case two bouts of back pain bed rest was as effective as visiting Osteopaths. I know that nowadays bed rest is not recommended.

My son visits an Osteopath who charges  £48 per visit every fortnight . Yesterday he said he was going to get some more Devils Claw for pain relief from H&B. The mind boggles. I am so old I can remember when Olive Oil was used only for removing Ear Wax. Last year I counted up 27 different bottles of Olive Oil in my local supermarket

  • Errrm, I'm so old that I still use olive oil to remove ear wax. It's better and cheaper than any commercial product!
