My husband completed his radiotherapy for PC  October last year. February PSA was very good but he has start to have blood in urine the past few days.

What  could this be? has the cancer pushed out of capsule has it changed to a more aggressive kind?

Next oncologist arranged for July it is 4 months?

Can anyone help is this something that happens so so soon after RT

Thank you as always

  • Good Morning

I understand this is an ongoing issue and you did have an appointment with your husbands oncologist a couple of months ago - did this not resolve the issues of a low blood count and blood in his stools and urine?

Blood in urine 6 months after radiotherapy is quite common and can be caused by radiation cystitis - this weakens the bladder blood vessels and causes them to bleed.

You need to contact his team, advise them of the bleeding and they will investigate the cause and take any action required.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Dear Milibob

    You are great..

unfortunately with PC and treatment  so much happen and we move from one hurdles and issue to the next. So I apologise.

Yes,  blood count was very ow both white and red after radiotherapy. We visited a private consultant and the NHS oncologist they both said it is expected after radiotherapy but the blood count will recover in time.

Also, hobby went through colonscopy (privately) no damage from radiotherapy but a large polyp was removed fortunately not cancerous.

The pink urine is a new phenomenon as we had just  recovered from colon issue but I am so reassured by your comments regarding possible side effect radiotherapy.

I dont know if you are a believer, but God Bless this forum for the help and mental sanity it provides.

I will keep you posted. Thank you

  • Hi   the radiotherapy is obviously aimed at the bad guys (cancer cells), but inevitably other body parts take hits as the beam is passing through.  Side effects can take months to surface, so I doubt it is anything much.  With any new symptom I always chat to my oncologist, cancer nurse specialist or GP just to be on the safe side.

    Best wishes, David

  • Thank you David we will follow up and send an update . So grateful for your advice

  • 4 years after 20 sessions of R/T I had blood in my stools but following a very unpleasant colonoscopy all that was found was signs of damage from radiation. So it can show up even after several years. I had also had some bleeding a few months after R/T but was told just to keep an eye as it was expedted.I had the treatment in Feb 2019.

  • Hi Perfect56

Thanks for sharing your experiences. It is helpful to know that these symptoms can show up  even after 4 years!

Bleeding through urine is very distressing  as it is so visible. We are trying to contact nurse hope to be told  be told itbis a side effect and my husband can relax. Poor man ..

    Thanks for your help
