My Dad was diagnosed last year and has had 3 Tace sessions. 6 tumours one side and 7 the other. He has Tace then a scan 6 weeks later then after the results they have always booked him another Tace. The first 2 were ok and said it was contained but after waiting 6 weeks for results (reckoned there is a national shortage of people who read the scans) we have just been told the cancer is now “significant “. The cancer care nurse would only say that and to wait for an appointment. Twice now he has had the most horrendous stomach pains. His stomach has swelled up this last week. He is bleeding from all orifices. His platelets are always horrendous. Bloods taken last week and still waiting on results. He is just under our local NHS hospital. I’ve been reading on here about 27 specialist hospitals so off to Google that in a minute. So I suppose I’m asking  if the Tace isn’t working what will be the next step? Is the stomach swelling a huge issue. I know from what I’ve read that he can’t be cured but he just can’t die. Would he get any better treatment if he was somewhere else like a Christie’s? We are Northern so Manchester is near us. Can you just insist they move your care? I’ve told him I want to go to the appointment on Monday as he never asks or gets the full story. And I’m so upset today that the London marathon has been postponed as I wanted him to see me there. Sometimes I start to wonder will he even be here in October where it’s been postponed to. My head is just so full of questions xx

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear how poorly your dad has been recently and can totally understand how worried you are.

I didn't have this type of cancer but I noticed that you hadn't had any responses yet so have found this information for you on treatment for liver cancer.

I think it's a good idea for you to go with your dad today as it'll give you the opportunity to ask questions. However, you'll need to be mindful of the type of questions you ask if your dad doesn't want to know certain things like prognosis, etc.

I don't know if you can insist that your dad is moved to another hospital but you can ask about having a second opinion and this information tells you how to go about getting one.

I hope the appointment goes well today and do come back and let the group know how your dad gets on.
