Hi, my 54 year old husband was diagnosed with inoperable oesophageal cancer which has spread to lymph nodes in November. He had a stent fitted early December as couldn’t swallow. His first chemotherapy session started on the 22nd December. He is coping well with the chemo with just fatigue as a side effect. He has terrible pain in his throat (feels like it’s being ripped out) where the tumour is. He is on a morphine patch and liquid oramorph, soluble paracetamol and pregablin. The pain is manageable most of the time but mainly when he wakes up he has a horrible cough and brings up white frothy secretions. Has anyone else experienced this and any tips for managing this or easing his pain would be very welcome.

  • Hi and welcome to the online community although I'm sorry that you've had to find us.

The pain and coughing that your husband is experiencing sounds really distressing. Has he told his CNS about his cough and that although the pain meds he's been given help they haven't completely relieved the pain? His team would want to know about anything that's causing a problem for him.

I hope he can get something for both the cough and the pain soon

Thanks for your reply. Yes have spoken to the CNS. She asked there team and the consultants for us. They said it’s a common symptom of OC but no  solid solutions for it. Recommended trying lansaprazol in a solution form. Worth a try.
his pain is pretty much controlled apart from this.
we are also trying gaviscon and manuka honey.
It is really distressing as sounds so raw and coarse Cry

  • I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that the lansaprazol works Fingers crossed

  • Hi, my partner was diagnosed with the same in august and had to have another Stent fitted as his previous one moved and he was unable to eat anything, the second one seems to have worked which he had fitted on 19th nov, we have paid for a private nutritionist and she has been amazing, my partner is now taking oycontin 40mg twice a day and has oxynorm liquid to use for breakthrough pain, it’s similar to oral Morph, but both together work better, also he has pukka aloo Vera juice from Amazon £15 per bottle which he  takes 40mls 3-4 times a day as this soothes the esophagus, the nutrientonist suggest that he stays in dexamethasone 4mg continuesly at the moment for the anti inflammatory effect, we spoke to his oncologist about this and they are happy to prescribe this for him. Since he has been using this it has helped no end, relieving his pain and he’s actually been eating proper steaks, Sunday roasts and normal food, also try magnesium powder mixed with apple juice or any juice 4mg at night before bed as this helps neutralize any excess acid, all the above has been suggested by a private nutritionist that we pay for but si far it has worked and helped stuart out immensely.
    xx

  • Maybe also ask for some famotodine and omeprozole, my partner takes 60mg famotodine and 60mg omperazole per day
