Hi, went to meet a consultant yesterday, started off with this is curative to I'm really worried about you, let's fit a stent, which, I've been tod closes the door to all other possible treatments,  including chemo.  Told to build up with feeds and exercise in the next two weeks, after 2 weeks in hospital and all that entails. The other hospital im under says no to the scent to keep the door open.  Im so confused right now.

  • Hi HisJem

that sounds so so confusing, you need to hear the reasons  why each hospital think what they have said so you can talk to family and decide which way you want to go. I hope you don’t stress too much over this. Big hugs

  • Hi HisJem

This sounds terribly confusing - you need to write down a huge list of questions for the professionals in this case and push for answers.

My 91-year-old Mum was diagnosed with incurable oesophageal cancer in January this year. She had a stent fitted to help with her eating. I went off and researched everything to do with stents as best I could (as you do) and I don't think it necessarily means that stents are fitted for palliative cases only. But there are people with a lot more expertise than I have available on these forums.

With Mum, she was taken into hospital within a week of having the endoscopy that discovered the problem. There was no advice to build up with feeds and exercise beforehand. She was then in hospital for three nights (so what the hospital told you to expect sounds dramatically different). It all happened so quickly.

The stent has certainly reduced the discomfort she had been suffering with reflux but she is now eating very little anyway - it's tough to encourage her to manage a mousse or a yoghurt at the moment.

I do hope you get the answers you need and that the doors are still open to other treatments. Take good care of yourself.

  • Hi Hisjem, i was advised to have a jej feed tube done as they said i probably wouldnt be able to eat at a later point, and i had lost a lot of weight which i didnt have to lose in the first place!.  it wasnt into my stomach as that was used for reconstruction, but the 1500 calories a day, bottle fed, it definately helped me keep some weight on.  Definately push back, and even ask for a second opinion, i was told initially its curable without surgery, but the next oncologist who mentioned surgery, when i asked if i was your daughter what would you advise, he said if you can have the surgery take it.  There is so much valued advice and experiences on here, you are definatley in the right place, God idea about taking a list, although i rarely got to open my notes, each appointment always went differently.

let us know how you get on,

    Jules
