Hello,

My husband had an oesophagogastrectomy one month ago and is doing really well with the recovery. His eating is much better than expected and has only had one episode of dumping (when the hospital gave him the wrong meal!) It taught him a lesson and he has been very careful since.  The only problem seems to be that liquids are harder to tolerate than actual food.  He doesn't drink with the meals and leaves about an hour after eating before drinking anything.  It feels like it just sticks - even though he is only sipping and it feels like it could always come straight back up and he wants to burp! Anyone got any ideas? He takes an antacid pill in the morning and an antacid medicine before bed but hasn't really been suffering  from that.  Obviously, for his system he wants to keep his fluid intake up, but it's a bit difficult. Any suggestions gratefully received.

  • I used to find that fizzy drinks went down easier. But not too much in the early days. Maybe just enough to prime his new plumbing!
After a couple of years I could even drink a pint of beer.
Now I have no problem with solids or liquids, so long as I leave at least half an hour after eating before drinking. Other people find they don’t need to take this precaution. We are all different. Finding what worked for me was a matter of trial and error!

Counting the days, making every day count.

Thanks for that Brent, we'll give it a go.  Tonic water (without the Gin!).

Glad to hear you're doing so well.  It has been trial and error but we must say hasn't been nearly as bad as he thought.  Will be happy when the lethargy wears off.  He's out for a walk most days, weather permitting. His positive attitude has been a Godsend.  Thanks for your reply.

Hi there - I really struggled to drink fluids at the same time as eating for a while.  But I am nearly two years on from surgery now and my insides have got used to it and I pretty well eat and drink what I like.  If I eat too fast or too much then dumping remains a risk though ... So glad your husband is doing okay.  Slight smile

  • Hi

I'm 2 years post treatment and can drink a couple of pints in the evening. I'm on PPI tablets morning and evening (for the rest of my life?) but I can't eat and drink together. I have to wait at least 1/2 an hour after eating before taking fluids. I do burp more than I used to, and occasionally get dumping if I eat too much fat or sugar. Early days (up to 9 months) post surgery like I found fizzy drinks helped me more. I still occasionally take antacids mostly at night due to heartburn.

    Hope this helps?

Thanks Nick, it's always good to hear these positive comments.  It seems to have eased in the last few days and milk seems to be the drink that goes down well! Amazing how everyone is different - it's a real learning curve.

    Keep well

Thanks for the info. He hasn't tried to eat and drink at the same time as we knew that could cause problems.  Seems to have eased in the last few days and milk seems to be the drink that goes down well! Sounds like you're doing great.

    Keep well

A year on from my surgery ability to eat and drink at same time is improving though drinking less then I should. Cant do fizzy drinks except sips but it’s getting better.
