Breast metastasis to bone

Hi.  I’ve only just been diagnosed with breast cancer and the tumour has been removed.  I mentioned pain in my leg and following a bone scan it seems it’s spread to a few areas but no evidence of it being in any organs yet.  I’m pretty terrified to say the least.  I’m seeing the Oncologist Monday.  my cancer is hormone positive / receptive(?) which apparently is good.  does anyone have any experience they can share.  I can’t help thinking I’ve now got only a short time left according to the internet !

  • Hello

sorry you are in this position but you are in good company.
try not to read the internet and wait to hear what your doctor has to say. everyone’s position is different. There are also loads of treatments available for people with breast cancer given it is a more common type of cancer. Just because it has spread doesn’t mean it is terminal and people have lived 20 years or more with metastatic cancer. Don’t set expectations on your prognosis other than what your oncologist tells you and even then if that feels too bleak then you can get a second opinion. The key is being comfortable with your oncologist. I have metastatic breast cancer and my original oncologist was very pessimistic with my prognosis but I have since changed my oncologist and they have a much more positive prognosis for me. Since I have started treatment I have responded very well and Most of the cancer has cleared up. This doesn’t mean I am cured but my prognosis is definitely better than what my original oncologist gave. So stay positive.

  • Thank you.  I’m so pleased you are well.  I’m working through the shock at present.  Your words are very reassuring.  I’m too stunned to go into positive mode but I think once I’ve had my Oncologist meeting and I have more facts I’ll deal with this better.   Thanks again

Hi  please check out the positive secondary BC stories here when you get a chance. They will help you to see that there is plenty of reasons to be hopeful. I am one year on from you and doing well. You are at a very frightening stage right now, in terms of how scared and shocked you feel but it does get better, I promise. Sometimes I even forget! I hope your meeting with your oncologist goes well and don't forget to check out the positive stories.

    Best wishes

    Hi fellow traveler

i am 2 years down the line with secondary in virtually all my bones. I know how the shock hits you and the desperate nights spent sleepless and scared. Please try to be calm. I am doing fine and there are many many others similar. There are some amazing folk here for you and we do understand.

Listen to your oncologist. Stop Dr Google. There is life to be had. Let us know how you get on.

  • Thank you Heart️.  I’m so pleased to hear you’re doing fine.  It really does mean a lot to me to receive these messages.  It is all so new.  I went from having a lumpectomy with a bit of RT planned with an  “excellent prognosis” to finding out it’s in my bones all within a month.   Fortunately, I had a Breast Consultant who acted on me mentioning pain in my legs and sent me off for a bone scan. She’s pretty amazing.  I have a great oncologist she’s pushing forward with my treatment so I’m totally in her hands.

You’re so right about Google.  Everyone’s journey will be different and I’m beginning to understand that about cancer.  At 55 it’s hard to come to terms with a limited time span but it has taught me to slow down and enjoy the small things.

Please let me know how you’re doing.  Axxx
