Hi - query about socialising over Christmas with family members who are interacting with many more people, and some attending school, at a time when I'm at my most vulnerable.
I take Capecitabine and Denosumab for metastatic breast cancer. Unfortunately Christmas Day and other planned social events fall due on days when I will be at my most fatigued (and presumably have lowest immunity) at the end of my cycle immediately before the 7-day break, so I am quite concerned about this. I haven't been in the situation before.
I know I need to check about live-virus vaccines, and will ask them to let me know of any flu or tummy bugs before we get together. But I'm wondering whether I should be taking any extra precautions such as we did in COVID times, and maybe restrict my time spent with people?
I’m trying to find a balance between living life as normal and avoiding bugs or viruses, as I feel poorly enough already on a "good" day! I would really appreciate if anyone can share their own thoughts or experience?
Many thanks!
Hi, I've been taking Capecitabine and having Denosumab injections since March of this year for metastatic breast cancer. Christmas falls on my 2nd week of taking Cape so I will no doubt be quite fatigued. I did worry more about coming into contact with unwell people more earlier on after diagnosis, but I am looking forward to seeing family (including 2 snotty grandchildren!) and friends at Christmas. I have had the flu vaccination. My sister recently visited after a 7 week holiday in Australia, Philippines and Singapore and had the most dreadful cough and cold, sneezing and coughing everywhere. I was rather worried I would succumb to the germs, but I was okay thankfully. I completely understand your concerns. It's difficult isn't it to weigh up the pros of living as normal life as possible to being mindful of your health! Xx
Thank you so much for your reply. So it seems you are not worrying too much about it, and are managing well. Maybe I am overly concerned. Also the flu jab - I’ve never thought of it before, but maybe this would be a good time and provide some extra reassurance.
This is very encouraging. Thank you! xx
