Hi,
Sorry guys it has been a while since I posted but I wondered if anyone can help. I was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, and had a mastectomy and reconstruction with an implant followed by pretty extensive Radiotherapy that finished about 18months ago. Since which my reconstructed breast has moved up and become very hard and painful, meaning it is impossible to wear a bra still - even a vest type one is painful after an hour or so. It is also an interestingly different shape. Having seen my breast surgeon he confirmed that it needs to be dealt with and said that I should have fat-grafting to improve the appearance. He said it might also help with the pain and it might not, that it would take a number of proceedures and that he offered it to all his patients who had radio-therapy, although mine was a particularly disfigured result from the radiotherapy. As the breast now has huge divots where it looks as if the skin has stuck to the implant in places - are these adhesions, and the skin is already tight over the breast I am not sure that I want to inject more into an already swollen and uncomfortable appendage. To be honest I would just like the implant gone and I don't mind going flat. Who am I kidding - I've had breast cancer and a mastectomy, at least that way the one remaining breast can benefit from the support of a bra. I trusted my surgeon, because although he really gave me the creeps, I was told he was very good at his job. That said, I don't feel I can talk to him and he seems much more concerned about how my breasts should look than I am. I am a reasonably slim 52 yr old woman with a history of sexual abuse, so that sort of interest makes me very uncomfortable. I stomached it for the initial surgery because it seemed trivial by comparison to getting the cancer sorted, but now I really don't want him touching me again. I have seen my GP who said that I can have a second opinion as to what to do about the painful implanted breast - which I am pretty sure has capsular contraction and adhesions and she agreed. However despite me asking for a female surgeon, she only knows of male surgeons in the area. Does anyone know of any female breast surgeons, if possible in the East of England/East Midlands.
Thank you so much guys.

Hi Pollydog welcome to the forum and I'm wondering if you might like to give the Macmillan Line a call and see if they know of any female surgeons that are in that area. 08088080000 Im suggesting that to enable you to get this information quicker as they will have any lists of surgeons or may know of some in that locale.
I had a female surgeon but Im in Scotland and my friend who is district nurse said that she knew that surgeon had been a woman when she saw my scar as it is in the fold of my breast so unless you know about it you cant see it.
Sending very best wishes your way for now.xx
I am sorry you have been through so much but you now sound like you a have a plan. May I suggest you contact Liz O'Riordan, she is s breast surgeon who has had breast cancer. She wrote the bible on breast cancer, look it up on Amazon .You can find her on twitter and also her website has an email address. I am sure she could recommend the direction you should be heading I hope you get the help you clearly deserve, Sam
Thank you so much, I will give them a call this afternoon. Very much appreciated, it is good to know I am not just being an idiot wanting a female surgeon. Thanks xx
Thank you Pretty Gardener, I have gone on her website page and sent a message so hopefully might get some sense of where I should go from here. Thank you so so much. Already feel better having had your reply. It is like invisible hands are there helping me up again. Bless you.
Thanks Lesley, that could be really helpful, I am only a couple of hours away from Birmingham so that isn't inconcieveable as an option. Really appreciate the advice, thank you. As I have just said to Pretty Gardener it is so good to know you are there, it can feel like a pretty lonely walk otherwise sometimes.
Thank you.
Liz O'Riordan is no longer practising as a Breast Surgeon, I understand after listening to her on the Radio that it is due to the Surgery that she had for breast cancer affecting her ability to operate for long periods.
She had a recurrence a couple of years ago and unusually had radiotherapy again, which damaged her on that side so she felt unable to continue. I emailed her once last year on a friend's request (for them) and she said that she can't give out that sort of recommendation.
Thanks guys, sorry not to have checked in until now, been laid up with a very nasty bug - not Covid though thank goodness. I really appreciate all the help. Looks like maybe talking to Macmillan helpline might be my best way forward. Thank you very much.
Hi
Lisa Caldon at Rotherham District hospital is fab - she was a locum when I had breast cancer and was my surgeon (not in Rotherham) she moved to a permanent position in Rotherham in 2017 and was my sister-in-laws consultant, she thought she was fab too. If it’s not too far to travel I would completely recommend her.
