Hi everyone I’m 6 years cancer free this post is for my mother 77 years newly diagnosed….she is grade 3 & 2.4cm lump with a few scattered cells around the lump ..lymph nodes not shown effected on ultrasound…this is the dilemma…the her2 results came back borderline so have gone for FISH TEST they went 3 weeks ago & are still not back apparently there’s a technical problem on the lab she was scheduled for surgery last week but was cancelled as the her2 results were not back they have again booked her surgery for Thursday…if her2 positive she’d be having chemo first …the consultant has given her the decision to make …they do surgery & if negative great but if positive chemo will be after & they won’t know which treatment the tumour responds best too …but if she doesn’t get treated fast I’m worried of spread as she’s grade 3 & the consultant said a good chance it’s positive….any thoughts on what she should do …anyone had surgery first on a lump bigger than 2 cm her2 positive
thanks so much
I had a delay waiting for FiSH test results after initial borderline HER2 test on my grade 3 lump. It was horrible waiting. I was keen to get the surgery and have it cut out and the nodes tested, but also keen to have the initial targeted treatment if it was HER+
The FISH result came back borderline, so treated as negative just days before my pencilled in surgery date which then went ahead. I seem to remember that whilst the result was desirable to have and respond to, the plan would be to go ahead with surgery rather than wait much longer anyway.
My lump imaged 1.2cm on both scan and mammogram, but in the event bits of it extended nearly 4cm. My lymph nodes hadn’t shown as involved on the scan, but of the 3 taken out 2 had cancer in, 1 with spread beginning beyond its capsule.
Iwish your mum all the best and do thoroughly understand and sympathise with this test result wait.
That was 3 years ago for me and I’ve had a lot of treatment, now just finishing abemaciclib. I’ve found dealing with treatment preferable to waiting for results! After the positive lymph nodes were found I had staging scans to check for metastasis to bones and other body parts. I was ok about that, but had a fright when following the CT scan I was told to get an appointment for a PET CT scan as something had seemed to be showing on the CT scan.I was so relieved to have it confirmed that it was ok, so that it was primary breast cancer that I had. These two periods of extr waiting stand out to me as very stressful
All the very best to you and your Mum! xx
Thanks so much for your reply ..yes I think if the results are not back she’s best getting it removed Thursday anyway as grade 3
That’s pretty much what I thought and the surgeon did agree- the initial borderline result for HER had been the reason for me seeing him after discussion in the multi disciplinary team rather than oncology. The grade 3 had already started to behave aggressively as it turned out..
What I’ve never thought to do is enquire whether a significant proportion of people have no clear -ve or +ve for HER…
xxx
