Isolation Note

Hello,

I've been booked in for lumpectomy and sentinal node biopsy on the 26th of Jan. I was told by my surgeon I would need to isolate and take a covid test three days prior to surgery. However, when admissions rang me with the date etc, they told me I had to isolate for 14 days beforehand. I queeried this and they said I had to as I was high risk for surgery.

Thing is, how do I get an isolation note for this? 111 don't have an option for it and GP's are saying they aren't giving sick notes for self isolating?

Should I just ring Breast Clinic on Monday?

  • Hi if you can't get a isolation note from the 111 online  facility for isolation notes . Is it because they don't provide a tick box for pre op isolation ?

If so I'd ring them back and ask what you are supposed to do !

Can't be the first time they've been asked it's normal now to do this pre op.

Agree with GP it's not a sick note but they should by now have provision for  this because they will have been informed you're having op .

Sorry I don't have answer hopefully someone will come on who has managed to do this

  • Thanks Northerner, yes they don't have a tick box!  I was going to ring the breast nurse tomorrow as if there's anyway I don't actually need to isolate for 14 days, then I would sooner do that!  The nurses will be able to advise me I guess. Well, I hope so!

    Thank you for replying x

  • Hi

I also don't have an answer but am hoping to push this back up to the top of the list. If no-one comes up with a tried and tested answer today then definitely ring your clinic tomorrow - you won't be the first person to have been through this.

I'm assuming you need it for work? With a cancer diagnosis, you are entitled to be off work anyway so you could always just get a sick note from your GP on that basis and have it long enough to cover your recovery? Unless your work's sick leave policy would make that a bad option, of course.

Sorry I can't be more help - hoping someone comes along soon

  • thanks Ronstar, That might be an idea as for the last week, I've agreed to do shorter days as I was getting tired. I was thinking this would be for another three weeks til surgery, so have asked for a sicknote for ammended hours.... so maybe just get signed off and cover it all? This is confusing, especially as the surgeon said only three days at first and admissions have put it to 14

  • Hi , it’s horrible when you get mixed messages. I think I’ve read here though of others being told to isolate for at least a week before their ops. And when my friend’s son had an op last year they both had to isolate before so that she could take him in. I’d definitely go for getting signed off by your GP. As  has said, a cancer diagnosis entitles you to the time off that you need.
My other thought would be that maybe the 2 weeks isolating is good thing, not because it’ll be fun at all but because the last thing you need is to test positive just before and have to have your surgery postponed.
Hope it gets resolved, sorry you’re having more stress, roll on your op date to get it done and dusted. Love and hugs, HFxx

  • Thanks for replying Happy Feet,  although I've been told to isolate for 14 days, I was told the rest of my household only need to isolate for the last three days when I'm having my covid test.... however, my freinds are telling me that my household must isolate for the entire time, even though we were going to social distance. If I can't get an isolation note, how is my partner meant to?

Hi, I had a mastectomy on the 11th November and I was told by the medical team to self-isolate for 14 days prior to it.

I contacted my GP and asked him for a sickness note starting from the first day of isolation and covering up to 6 weeks, which was the approximate time for my recovery. This, since, has been extended because I was in too much pain to going back to work.

    I hope this will help.

  • Thanks Shanty and  I hope you're recovering well and treatment going good too.

I know the isolation times have changed recently to three days and remain on 14 for those with underlying health conditions. This seems to be why I can't find any information that is definite online.  It's all so confusing!

It was good for me to have the 14 days before the operation because I could concentrate on myself and prepare psychologically and be at peace for the operation. Could you call the McMillan helpline? They will have the information you need and you should be able to point you in the right direction? All the best.

Hi rebbespad! I have my surgery this coming Thursday and both my husband and I have been isolating since New Years Eve. My shielding letter apparently counts as a sick note, but as I’m in Scotland my letter came from ScotGov.
