Anastrozole and tart cherry capsules

Hi again. Almost a year on from discovering idc through mammogram. Er+. Had lumpectomy, radiotherapy and now been on anastrozole for @ 6 months now.

Doing ok I guess, burning/pins and needles in fingers, trigger finger in one of my thumbs, joint aches and pains and trying to find best time to take my tablet to avoid constantly waking up through the night. But realise this is helping to prevent another squatter taking over my boob, so just taking the discomfort.

I'm in a fb group and there are many ladies from America who swear by loratadine (anti histamine) and tart cherry juice to help with joint pain and other AI related pains.

I have spoken to bcn about the safety of taking these with my cancer type, but she wouldn’t commit to saying they ok to use and suggested I speak to pharmacist. Again he would not commit as it’s a supplement so I’m still none the wiser and wondering who I can ask for a definite yes or no it’s safe to take answer.

I guess I’m reaching out to you guys in the hope they have had an answer from someone or point me in the right direction as to who would be able to help, or if anyone does indeed take these supplements and have noticed an improvement.

  • Hello,  always good to check on things you see on FB.  If you google tart cherry juice study for arthralgia from aromatase inhibitors there is an excellent double blind study on Pub Med.  I cannot send you the link as Macmillan won’t let me as study is from US.  Pub Med is also with National Library of Medicine.  This will help you.
Take care.  I was on Anastrazole for 3 1/2 years but side effects were too much so now on letrozole.  Doing ok on it but only been a bit over 3 months.  I take my letrozole just before bed and seems to work.  My oncologist suggested it.  Bye for now.

  • Hi

I haven’t taken either of these but I’m sure I remember loratidine being mentioned by   in previous posts elsewhere. Hope you don’t mind moomy! Don’t know about tart cherry. I’m interested in anything that might help with aches and pains but have been wary of supplements in case they might interfere with the Anastrozole which I took for 7 years. Only stopped a couple of months ago. I’m going to look into medicinal mushrooms but will book in to see a nutritionist as I’d like guidance. They’re used in some countries alongside conventional treatments, but not in the UK.
Will watch this thread with interest!

  • Thanks for tagging me,  yes, loratidine (proper Brand name is Clarityn) is used, particularly in the States, for the pain when using the jabs to boost your white cells, filgrastim. they use it a lot for specific blood cancers as chemo for that really hammers white cells. So I came across it for daughter’s treatment, as she had Hodgkins Lymphoma.

My advice on any non prescribed meds is to check with your team,
I checked with the senior pharmacist on CBD oil which I use for arthritis, particularly back pain. she said it was ok but would exacerbate side effects. I replied that as long as they kept me supplied with loperamide, (I’m on Abemaciclib as well as Exemestane) I’d be ok with s/es!
I do take multi-vit and mineral tabs, and D3. If you ever get prescribed D3 you need to ensure you’ve got Vitamin K too.

    • I am supplied loratadine via NHS with my monthly abemaciclib so its obviously ok to take. Ive now started taking tart cherry capsules for my very achey joints but I've just started so its too early to tell yet but I'm living in hopes that my knees improve.  Been on anastrozole for round 18 months and really suffering with joint pain.
  • i have been taking collagen  (cow) and noticed a difference in joints, i read some studies which questioned it, but i do find it helps, i tried fish oil and it didnt

  • also the brand you are on can make a difference, if you get lots of weird pains ask if there is another brand you can take, i started on letrozole, and was achy but ok, for 3 months (that is the length of prescription) then they gave me a different brand and had weird chest pains and some shooting type pain, they then put me on anastrozole which has been ok, but yes aches, i started the collagen late Dec and notice a difference, i dont necessarily take it every day, but flavourless mixed in coffee and while i still get some night aches my knees and such are much less creaky.

  • Hiya...I'll look into changing the brand and seeing if that improves things. Ive been on Elavate collagen powder for about a year and my sore wrists have improved a bit but its the knees and ive now been diagnosed with osteoarthritis aargh... thanks for your input and keep on keeping on xxx

  • Hi. I've seen the posts about tart cherry extract capsules too so I asked my oncologist who checked and said she couldn't find anything against taking it so it might be worth a try. I've been taking it for a few months and although during the day the pain is more manageable, at night and early morning when I get up I'm still suffering. I was on letrozole originally and changed to Exemestane. I've just had a month break from Exemestane and still have joint pain so I'm going to give it another go and if it doesn't improve, they were looking at changing to another type like anastrozole or tamoxifen.

    All the best. x
