Hi
I had my masectomy at the beginning of September and have not had the best support so far from the health professionals as apparently we are supposed to get an after care support package but seemingly was told I've slipped through the net.
I live alone so have found this really hard getting information that I need and spend alot of time making calls and basically googling information. My stress levels are now maxed out.
My latest problem that I cannot seem to get any advice on is pigmentation surrounding my scar. When I asked the chemo nurse yesterday she said it would disappear when chemo finishes.
This will not be the case as I am mixed race and the pigmentation stays for years and may never disappear due to our melanin levels. Now my concern is when I have my reconstruction the dark patches will be clear to see all over the new breast and this causes me great concern and know it will effect me. Has anyone had anything similar as cannot get information from health care professionals on this one?
Hi
A warm welcome to the online community - and sorry to hear about the difficulties you are having. Walking the cancer road is tough and it can be exhausting finding all the information you want and need.
I can't really give you the answer you are looking for, but I know a very small amount about skin and I would say that you are best placed to know how pigmentation behaves on your skin - we are all different and some people pigment more easily and some people find pigmentation fades slower on their skin, it's very individual. I am very fair skinned but I pigment easily and even small superficial scars take months to fade. It may take time for you, but I would also say that your concern might diminish in time as well as you adjust to your body after the shock and stress of treatment.
Well, that's the future, though and not a whole heap of help right now. I would think talking to the plastic surgeon might give you some answers - I'm not sure how easy that would be for you right now but you could ask your BCN if there is anyone in the recon team you can ask. You could also try posting in our Ask a Nurse section - they are lovely and helpful and might be able to point you in the direction of the information you are looking for.
I hope you are coping with chemo well - if you fancy it, you can check out our breast cancer chemo thread. It's a place for everyone going through treatment to get together and share tips, experiences etc.
I hope we can help you find some of the answers you want - I know how frustrating it can be trying to find information around these issues.

Hi I appreciate your response but have tried all avenues with getting advice on my current circumstances. My masectomy went fine no concerns and dealt with this better than I thought I would and the same with chemo as just had 4th session and coping to the best.
This pigmentation has been the only thing that has bothered me and as I said the long term effects for women of colour is so different and may last for years. My concerns will not diminish as its effecting me already as seems to be getting worse. Surgeons...Doctors or anyone that can redirect me to someone that can me the advice i need to managing it right now is frustrating as cannot get any answers.
If anyone could recommend cream/oils or any advice at all i would be extremely grateful.
