Hello, I'm due to have  a lumpectomy and sentinal node biopsy done soon, I hope.

I'm a bit worried about the anaesthetic as I am a rather larger lady. Anyone got any words of wisdom for me?

  • Hi I had a lumpectomy and removal two lumps as well as 3 lymph nodes I am also a large lady, the Anaesthetists are very well trained and they will speak to before surgery and they will monitor you closely during operation. You will be in good hands. You should read up on your aftercare and follow their guidance. I am ok after surgery, although I was required to have Chemo which wasn't required before, they found 2 lumps when the scan had only shown 1 and its also an aggressive cancer so Chemo was recommended I have had first session....which is another story for another day

  • Thanks for replying HopefulSam it's been very reassuring! Hope the Chemo goes alright. Mine is aggressive but small and no lymph nodes invoved as far as we know.... they said I would only need chemo if it had gone into the nodes, so fingers crossed for that. Stay strong Lovely xx

  • Use a spare pillow to support the breast that has been operated on, as the pull can be uncomfortable, do the exercises as recommended dont lift heavy items, just go with guidance take the rest, and if you are given any blood thinning injections to self-administered (they are so small n thin and easy) take them around same time every morning.

  • OMG! Blood thinning injections? This is news to me! I trained as a nurse thirty years ago so the thought of injecting  doesn't bother me, but I had no idea this was even a thing! Thanks for all the advice! I have some more reading to do now!

  • Hi ,  Just to reassure you on the anaesthetic - the anaesthetists are a whole different breed to the type you probably  remember in your nurse training . They will speak to you before the operation and answer any of your worries /concerns.I have had several anaesthetics in my time (now 74) and my most recent one was a dream! I had no sickness /nausea or sore throat afterwards and it all went so quickly and in less than an hour afterwards  I was up and dressed . I had the same operation that you are having. You will probably be only in as a day case unless you are late on the list. Wishing you no more worries about the anaesthetic!! xxKwissy

  • Thanks Kwissy! Last time I had an anaesthetic it was for a tonsilectomy when I was 23 so nearly thirty years ago! They tore my mouth and I was so ill afterwards....... yes, I was told I would be in and out in a day, I hope I am in early as I have to catch the train to the hospital which is near the Lake District and I'm worried about getting the last one back! Fingers crossed and thanks for replying x

  • Just a thought It could well be worth mentioning to your Consultant/ BCN/Anaesthetist that this is what your plan is. I understood that I had to be collected from hospital by car or taxi post operation! This may be the case in your area too and better to know earlier than on the day !! Fingers crossed for you x

  • Wouldn't recommend a train ride after the operation on the same day as an anaesthetic,  I don't think I could have done that after mine.  I too am a large lady and suffer with sleep apnoea so the anaesthetist made sure I was aware of the precautions they would take during and after the operation.

  • oh dear. I have no one to fetch me and I am not paying a taxi for a forty mile trip.

  • Thanks Lesley Its reassuring to hear you say that. (Not about the train ride though)! Yes, it's probably best I get a lift sorted out, just didn't want to be a nuisance to anyone really. Hope you are recovering well x
