Hello
I have a few questions. I haven't had my mastectomy yet. Is anyone happy with the feeling of your silicon implants? I've heard they feel cold and horrible. Is it true? Would anyone recommend a DIEP instead of implants? I have DCIS and I don't know if I'll need radio therapy or not so should I delay getting implants as I've heard that the therapy makes the implants mis-shapen and hard. I like the idea of reconstruction at the same time as the mastectomy to avoid the worry of another surgery. Any advice?
Thanks
Hi,
so sorry you’re here and facing all this.
I hope your surgeon will help as mine was happy to do, though I didn’t need it. She suggested if my nodes were affected so that I would need radiotherapy she could use a temporary implant, then after all treatment, replace it with the permanent one.
in the end of course I just had a mastectomy with the permanent implant. Yes I know it doesn’t look the same as the other side, but in a slightly padded bra nobody could tell, and no it doesn’t feel cold, it’s the same temperature as the other side. But it’s below some muscle which might make the difference?
All this would be well worth discussing with your surgeon and BCN, they will be able to advise and reassure you.

Glad you’ve an appointment soon. I also found to begin with that the implant felt very ‘tight’ but it now has a bit of droop and feels softer (had mx in 2018). I had a ‘plastics’ opinion but we decided the slight improvement I would gain wouldn’t be worth more surgery, it would be reducing my other boob as well and as I’m only a ‘B’ cup I didn’t want that!

Hi Ebb, just to say I had a Silicon implant 6 years ago after a left MX 11 years ago. It has always felt fine but did not look anything like my right side. I am now thinking of getting it removed as I have just had right MX for ILC. Eleven years ago I had DCIS like you and I wanted a double MX but it was not an option. I have had Mammograms every year but was never really warned about ILC not showing on Mammograms. If I could turn back time I would have gone private and had the double. I did not have Radio but they may do this now and of course implants may have improved. I hope you are Ok, sending virtual hugs.
Wow. Sounds like quite a journey you've been on. Thanks for the hugs xx
