Exercises after mastectomy.

Hello,

It is 7 days after my mastectomy, my drain came out on Friday and I'm struggling with the exercises. The surgeon couldn't do the intended surgical line because during surgery they discovered my tumour had embedded itself in the skin above, so my scar is from the breast bone, wiggles to almost past my armpit. The pain is like razor blades right down my arm. I know it is early days, but the exercises are incredibly painful to do.  Any tips please.

Also tips on washing please. I'm not allowed to shower yet because of the glue. How did you get the pen lines off???? Afraid to rub at the marks!!

I'm a little disappointed in the tumour/skin situation as I had been telling them throughout my chemo that a red mark had appeared on my skin and was it anything? Telephone consultations. I'll find out more on the 28th.

Thank you for your comments. xx

  • So very sorry you’ve had such a major problem! It’s still early days for you, you’ve obviously had quite a big op so be kind to yourself! The exercises are hard to start with but do persist and you’ll find things gradually improve. Maybe take some paracetamol about half an hour before you do them, too?
The pain is most likely from cut nerve endings, horrible but should ease, you might be able to help by gentle massage but till you’re healed keep away from the scar itself (massaging tells the nerve endings to ease off) and that will help your scar when it’s more healed too. But do check with your BCN as to when you can massage the scar directly. I was told as my Mx was glued I could shower from the day after I got home, but gently and not to rub till I was more healed. The lines do wear off, as does the glue.

  • Thank you moomy,

I'm taking paracetamol 2, 4x a day. Some days are better than others. I spoke to my BCN this afternoon, who said I could take codeine but beware constipation so not going down that route. 5 months of constipation while on chemo is enough for me!!!

She says I can shower now but no soap. Massage with moisturiser either side the scar and under my arm, which I do. It will help the seromer and swelling.  She said to wear a camisole now and the stitches that have poked through will either drop out or they will remove them on Monday, and to put a pad over the stitches.

So looking forward to my shower in the morning!!  And one day getting back to doing things.

    Thank you xxx

  • I’m glad you’ve been able to chat to your BCN about aftercare. You’ll be reassured when you see her on Monday!

and shower tomorrow, yay! That’s great, take care getting in and out though.

  • Hello moomy, I've been back to the hospital last friday, when they took the fluid out of the seroma - half a pint! I'm still in a lot of pain, taking paracetamol and Ibuprofen. I feel like my side and armpit is in a vice. Constant pressure. I know the tumour is out but feeling so tearful. I hate looking at myself in the mornings and at night. Sorry - juts really struggling. Worried that the reason the tumour was embedded into the skin above is secondary or inflammatory breast cancer. Not so positive today. xx
